I drive 50 miles one way to work, Can I take my fuel cost off on my taxes?

lepr0kan
Not if you're just driving to work. If you were driving to see clients or driving as part of your work than yes you could deduct mileage, but as your normal daily to and from employment, No.

Judy1
No, sorry, that's called commuting cost and isn't tax deductible.

No, as commuting costs are not deductible.

Nope. I drive 75 miles each way. It sure would be nice, but commuting costs are NEVER deductible.

It MIGHT be possible to work around that income cases, though. A couple of times a week I have an early job near home. When I do that, the trip from the branch to the main office IS deductible since the commute is the first trip of the day.

LittleBarb
Gas and mileage costs driving to and from work is NOT an allowable deduction... HOWEVER, if you have more then one job, a percentage of the mileage from one job to the OTHER would be deductible.... Also, as stated above, if you drive your own vehicle and have UNREIMBURSED VEHICLE EXPENSES as part of your JOB, those UNREIMBURSED VEHICLE EXPENSES can be deducted....

j-man
If you are self-employeed or you are going to see clients, you can deduct the mileage, and not your fuel costs. If this is just your commute every day, then no, you cannot deduct anything.

onandonandonanon
NO everyone has to get to work and you can't deduct it! You didn't have to take a job that far away! You only get to deduct travel that is done for your work!

If your drive is commuting to work, i.e., from your home to your place of business, the answer is No. You cannot deduct commuting costs. If, on the other hand ( which hand is that anyway?) you then drive from your place of business to another location where you have work to do, the second and subsequent trips to other work locations are deductible.
Commuting is not deductible.
IRS allows 48.5 cents per mile for 07 for business expenses.
and will allow .50 per mile for 08.
Typically however, unless you are in a position wherein you are subject to audit( out of line expenses, cash business, etc.
people figure their total mileage, estimate the amount driven for business, ( don't go hog wild) and then figure the deduction.
IRS is not as hard nosed as folks think if you don't go overboard.

imnickdell
you might be allowed a deduction up too a certain amount
if driving was your work then i am sure you can deduct

jd
Thats bad for the economy. You should move closer to work.
