Is this your only job? How long have you been there? Did you give employer form P45 when you started, or if not, did he ask you to sign form P46?
You can earn a total of £6035 in a tax year (6th April to 5th April) before you have to pay tax. Employer cannot sort your tax code for you unless he didn't comply with my questions. Tax office will not discuss your personal affairs with him.
If the above questions do not indicate a cause of code BR, contact tax office, and ask what information is needed to put you on the right code number. |

Fifty Pounds a week? Is that correct? This is from the official Government website below:
"Everyone can earn a certain amount each year without paying any Income Tax. This is called your Personal Allowance. In 2008-2009 the Personal Allowance is £6,035".
So, you only get £2,600 per year. You should not pay ANY tax.
BR Tax Code is used when all your income is taxed at the basic rate - currently 20 per cent (most commonly used for a second job or pension). This may be a temporary code, so you will be entitled to get all the tax back. Use the second website to find your Tax Office, and ask them why you are paying tax. |

it is normal to have 25% of your earnings taked in tax but in the uk, you do not earn enough to pay tax, i think you are allowed to earn £92 before paying tax, have a word with your employer |

It sounds it! You should get your employer to check your tax code, or ring HM Revenues & Customs. When I was working part time I could earn upto four thousand and something tax-free but when I went full time I was getting emergency taxed, it's easy for them to get it wrong if your circumstances have changed..but yes that is definately too much for you to be paying. |
