Accident Man
I fail to understand this issue with the 'Council Tax' in England.?
If I paid a little each week, cash, at the post office, I have until the end of the financal year to pay the bill.

If however I pay by direct debit and miss a payment (January for example, as I don't get a lot of work in December), I am threatened with court action for missing a payment.

Surely aslong as they get their money by March 31st there should be no problem.

Any advise or views?

Unfortunately that's incorrect.

Unless the council has given you an annual instalment plan with 1 payment at the year end (almost unheard of) then missing any payment on the instalment plan you have been given should produce a reminder.

i don't pay any!

for years it bugged me having to pay it. i kept forgetting and was threatened with court action several times.
i figured: what do i get for my money? education? i have no kids. a police service? don't make me laugh. they empty the bins? no they don't. you have to do most of the work, they just pick it up from the roadside, when they can be bothered.

so i sold up and bought a boat instead. no council taax applicable. bliss!

I pay a little each week at the post office and a couple of years ago I missed a week, therefore falling behind. They sent me a threatening letter for £23! Since then I have always made sure that I pay more than I should and then at the end of the year they end up owing me!! I either get them to send me a cheque or take it off next year's bill - it was nearly 300 quid last year

These threats are automatically generated by their systems. The same happened to me.

If you contact them and explain they will usually allow you some more time - they have no choice so long as you agree to pay

they will threaten it but wont do anything about it till the end of the tax year

i've been summoned to court as well, it takes the piss i don't see what were paying it for anyway. if you know what were paying council tax for please let me know.

Yes you are right, as long as you pay what you owe by the end of the financial year they should have no claim against you. If however they threaten with court action, accept it and put your valid reasons to the judge as to why there was less income. You should have filled a form in to the council declaring change of circumstances for the period in question.

the council tax has to be paid when they ask for it. If you change the schedule unilaterally (by selfishly being broke or buying unnecessary items such as food), they will have the right to charge you.

I love the council, they are ace! i wish i was in the council, so i could sit on a high horse and look down on the little people.

The Ghost
the councils work their budget out in the April so the y have effectivly spent all the money by the following march. Therefore if you miss a couple of payments they panic and start sending out threats of action

Whats the rush anyway?
Will it be spent upon improving the services we are supposed to be paying for?
No ,it will be spent on mosques and feathering the nests of council administrators,"fact finding tours of south america",non-jobs and mindless, unecessary new departments.
Of course ,the police dont bother turning up unless you havent paid the latest stealth tax and we all have recycling factories in our backyards.
I would hope for the public to make a stand in an organised witholding of council tax until we have councils that can actually do the job.

I suggest that you pay your council tax arrears, as they will take you to the Magistrates court, if you do not pay ,and not only the cost has to be paid by you, but also the bailiff will call and you have to pay his cost as well.
