You have to file an amended return. You should be able to go back to the site that you filed electronically and file your amended return from there.

Since we are well before the filing date, you won't have to worry about interest and penalties that normally come from underreporting income.

Like others have said, go ahead and file a 1040X which is an amended return. You will need to list all your information from your original return, indicate any changes and then at the end explain why you are making those changes. You will then pay in any tax resulting from the 1099.

It would be a good idea also to make a copy of the 1099 and attach that to the return.

You cannot efile this form and will have to mail it in. Mail it to the addresses in the 1040X instruction book, not the normal tax return mailing addresses. They could very well be different.

Good luck.

Just wait: If you received one then so did IRS!
You do not want to send in the 1040X (amended return until your current return is processed. Their is a good chance the IRS will pick-up on the error and send you a letter stating they had to correct your return, if so they will adjust your refund.
or tell you how much you owe, and since its a 1099 then they also will adjust and collect the Social Security that would be due also. If you get the letter read it and if it wants you to send anything it will ask for it.
if your return got processed with out the 1099 adjusting then you will send in the 1040 X to correct it and pay the difference due. their are no penalties or interest until the tax is due so you just have to complete that by April 15th.
but regardless wait a few weeks so your return that you sent in gets processed. otherwise you just create havoc in the system when they get processed in the wrong order.

Oh yes and did I forget: it is one of the easiest form the IRS has Made, in fact you even write in plain english on the back to explain the changes.
Below is the link for the Form, and the Instructions.

You'll need to file an amended return on a form 1040X - you can download one at irs.gov

File an ammended return. This should be available online.

If the online method allows you to go through the motions of doing taxes again (without submitting), see if adding that amount in makes any difference in your tax liability. Otherwise you can download Form 1040X and whatever 1040 you used and instructions from irs.gov and your state.

If the 1099 was for a small amount of interest, it may not make any difference due to tax table and dollar rounding. But if it does make a difference, you should file the 1040X with additional payment by April 15th.

You can amend your tax return.

File an amended return (Form 1040X). But you should really wait until you've made sure you've got all your info together. Since you already filed, no reason not to wait until April to make sure you've got everything and then file the 1040X.
