suavi29 | I filed my taxes on my own, and it said that I wasn't eligible for the rebate, can I....? |
So I filed my taxes on my own on Turbo Tax.com and it said I wasn't eligible for the rebate that the government is giving out, however everyone else says that I am and that I must have entered information wrong.
Can I go back to H&R Block (for example) and have them look over what I did and see if I can still get the rebate?!
THX! Additional Details I put that I can still be claimed as a dependent on someone elses taxes, however my mom does not file...(not required)
And i am 22 yrs old still in college |

If your mother had filed, she would have claimed you as a dependent. Sounds like your return is correct. Since you could be claimed as a dependent, your return does not qualify for a rebate.
But you certainly can go back to your preparer and have them review it for you. |

If you are a dependent, you aren't eligible. If you earned less thatn $3000 last year you aren't likely to be eligible. If you don't have a social security number, you aren't eligible.
Other than those, you most likely are. |

That one person is wrong, it wont effect your taxes next year, nor will it be "paid back" ,....its non taxable.
this is right from the IRS website:
It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return. |

you'll need to do an amended return,i think that's form 1040x and send it by certified mail not electronically either, make sure to mark no you can't be claimed as an dependent and you should qualify for the rebate then, but you had to have at least 3000.00 dollars of income also,ss # also.
call the irs at 1-800-829-1040 to see how to fill it out if u don't understand or you may be able to ask hrblock for help, but you must mail it though. |

You can check with a tax prep firm but they will want to charge you for this. What was your income, if you made atleast 3000 for the year you should have quailified. You can check the IRS website for more information on the rebate checks |

Due to the fact that you reported on your tax return that you could be claimed by someone else - that made you ineligible for the stimulus rebate.
As far as amending the return to be eligible for the stimulus rebate, you could try it, but the IRS would probably question why all of a sudden you are giving information that you are now eligible for something you already told them you weren't eligible for. Additionally, since you've already filed your taxes; depending on your tax situation, you may owe taxes on your original tax return. |

Sure. They will or won't find something. |

I am sure it is just an error take it to an H&R block so that someone can review it and take it from there. Good Luck. |

The rebate is based on your original 2007 tax return as filed.
The IRS will not recalculate your rebate *unless* it's due to an issue with SSA/RRB/VA/combat zone income.
What was your income? Was it from a W-2?
Did you claim your own exemption?
<<edit>>
dependents were not eligible.
even if your mom didn't claim you, she was entitled to--meaning you couldn't. |

WHY do you want this "rebate",its a LOAN on your estimated taxes for next year,it has to be paid back, its no bargain!!Either way, youll have to file an amended return if you are eligible. |
