If you already received a bill for those back taxes, your refund will most CERTAINLY be held up. If you owe the IRS OR the state, and RECEIVED A BILL---which means that the back taxes you owe are a matter of record, what happens is your current refund will be held UNTIL that portion which you owe for back taxes is applied to those back taxes and a new check will be cut for the DIFFERENCE and sent to you----lets say you owe $400 in back taxes and your refund for 2007 was $600.... (fed return only)... you will have to wait MUCH longer then the 15 days for the refund and it will only be for $200....with an explanation attached.... The state works the same way.... IT COULD however be that the system has not caught UP with the fact that you owe back taxes yet and you COULD receive a refund..... BUT usually, when someone doesn't pay their taxes from a previous or prior year, it sends up a "flag" on the current return when a refund is requested...

Uh yeah if you filed so you get them back faster. just because you owe money doesn't mean it will take longer... they will just deduct it from your refund.

If you owe back taxes, your refund will be delayed. The IRS will deduct the amount you owe and send you a check for the balance, if any.

This will take additional time. It's hard to say how much time, but it could add a couple of additional weeks to the process.

If your refund is more than you owe you might get some money back if after they add the penalties for the taxed owed there is any money left over. Good luck.

Yes but they are going to take what you owe them.

I love that...I FLED my taxes. If they owe you more than you owe them, you get the difference. Since it is back taxes, there may be fines and interest added onto your debt. Why didn't HRB go over all this with you??!!

Da Bears.
you will get some money back......Last year i didn't claim my 1500.00 Casino winnings.......when you hit a jackpot at a casino they give you a tax form.........................I go to H&R block every year................Last year they just took the money i owed right out of my refund check. if you owe 500.00 and your refund is 1000.00 you will get a check for 500.00

You'll get the difference between what you owe and your refund amount. They'll keep the rest and pay off your debt.

I called the IRS hotline and a Rep from there told me that since I owed Some money but the amount of my return is greater than the amound I owe, the difference would be deposited to me on the date H&R block predicted. I really hope that the Rep knew what she was talking about.
