No... 1st requirement is a social security number.... That's an absolute...

I believe you can. You need to file some paperwork and prove that you support your mom more than 50% of what she makes. You will use the ITIN number. Let me know if you find out more about this.

src50
No, you cannot. You are just gifting money to her.

kckid2
It is possible to claim your Mom living in Mexico. but you have to satisfy some other requirements. Her income, excluding your payments must be less than $3400, you must provide more than half her support, and I believe she may need to get a ITIN (like a SSN).

IRS Regs ..152-2(a)(2) and IRC Sec 252(b)(3)

I give to my mom too, but it is actually gifting and not supporting her.

Keisha
No you can't claim her as a dependent. Also consider how much you send to her for the year as gifts over $10 000 are subject to the gift tax

Kent-B-True
Hi Sandi, I would go to any TAX office and ask them. As a matter of fact I know this lady that claims some kids in Mexico, not exactly sure of the relationship, but they maybe some options since you are actually doing that on a regular basis. Good Luck.

Let me see if I can find out more I'll send you an email.
