I got a 1099 from a company that paid me 718$ USD and took no taxes out?
i got a 1099 from a company that paid me 718$ USD and took no taxes out and i have no deductions or dependents or any other income to claim. I did an efile online to see what it would say i owed and it said 0 and i got back 0 so do i even have to file this if that is the only income i am getting? seems like a waste of time and money for me to file if i am not owing them anything or they owe me anything

Mmmkay?
No you don't have to file if that is the only income you have.

$718 from a 1099-Misc box 7 is at least $101 in SE Tax. If it is self-employment income, the filing requirement is $400.

If you have other income, it's taxable as income too.

The nice thing about filing is then the IRS is sure you don't owe them. They computer match all 1099s against returns filed. We routinely get witholding orders from the IRS because people didn't file a return to match their 1099... How much trouble will it be to get that all fixed compared to filling out a 1040 now?

Judy1
If it's shown as non-employee compensation, yes you have to file it since it's over the $400 limit. You won't owe income tax but you will owe self-employment tax on it. S ounds like maybe on your test efile you showed the income in the wrong place. It doesn't just go on the line where W-2 income would go. It's considered self-employment.

You are not filing correctly. The 1099 is not considered wages it is self employment income and must be filed on a Schedule C and the self employment tax on a Schedule SE. You will owe self employment tax if nothing else

if u are dependant then this income might have to be reported by the person who is claiming u as dependant...not sure with that...however if you only earned 718 for entire year then you you are getting the right figure (0)

It is the law.

It's a waste of time and money. Keep your postage stamps! When the IRS finally gets around to auditing you within the next 3 to 4 years, they will discover that they only received 1 (one)1099 for $718.00. They will not care to pursue anything whatsoever at that point and will move on to the next file.

You don't need to file but you do need to send in estimated tax this year in case you make more than 3400.00. The only reason you did not owe was because, even though you cannot claim yourself [someone must be supporting you], you have the 5350 standard deduction if you are single, which reduced your adjusted gross income to zero. This assumes you had no other income such as dividends, interest, capital gains, disability, pension coming in, etc. It also assumes that you have no previous Federal income tax liability from a previous year. Save your receipts and all your tax returns. Best to you.
