I got married in June, how should I file taxes this year?
He makes more money then me and has to pay in, where I have my son I claim (he is not the father), can we file separately, is this a good or bad idea.

You can file as married filing separately, but it will almost surely cost you more total tax between you. Your choices of filing status are MFS or joint, not single or head of household.

Since you are now married, it doesn't matter whether or not your spouse is your child's father. A step-parent is treated for tax purposes just like a biological parent.

If you file as MFS you are not eligible for EIC.

You must file as married - either jointly or separately. Run the numbers both ways, but joint returns usually result in less tax.

You cannot file as single. You can file as married filing jointly or married filing seperately, do it both ways and see which is more favorable to you

You have two choices; married, filing joint, or, married, filing seperate. Under the married, filing seperate, you forfeit EIC & CTC, education credits and more. Married, filing joint makes more sense at first blush; why not run it both ways and see which gives you the most bang for the buck?

If you are legally married, you can file either married filing joint or married filing separate. No other way.

Married filing joint is usually better, and looks like it would be better in your case. But, if you want to know for sure, prepare "dummy" returns both ways, and see.

Note: if you file married filing separate, you will lose some of the tax credits having a dependent provides.

File jointly; it almost always results in less tax to pay or even a refund.

My husband and I were married in August of 2006 and we filed jointly so he could get more money in financial aid for college. We were both students under the age of 25; I had recently quit school to take a well paying job with a bank while he completed his computer science degree. Our total income for the year was only $13,000 so combined with a merit scholarship he received from the college his last 2 years were payed in full.

You can file as married filing jointly (MFJ) or married filing separately. In most cases, it is better to file as MFJ. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-status-for-married.html

Filing jointly is almost always better.

If he has to pay in and you have a dependent, do married filing seperately. Of course, your deduction is higher if you file joint, but if he has to pay in, it will cancel that.

File jointly. If you file separately you may lose a lot of the benefit of having your son (who is now both of yours).
