I got married in May 2007. Do I need to file my taxes as married or single for 2007 tax year?

married, as long as you are still married at year end. Your filing status for the year is based on what you were as of 12/31 of any year. The exception to that rule is if you were widowed during the year, the irs treats you as if you were married for the entire year, even if your spouse died on Jan 01. You do have the option though of filing as married filing separately for 2007 though, but I wouldn't advise it, you lose a lot of deductions and credits by doing that.

axyl44
Married, assuming you are still wed 12/31/07. Can also file as 'married filing seperate', but this typically is less beneficial than 'married filing joint'.

you need to file as married filing jointly or married filing seperate. The law is if you get married at any point during the year (even up to 11:59pm on 12/31/07) you are considered married the whole year for tax purposes.

You will have a lower tax burden filing jointly or as stated married

Spock (rhp)
married ... assuming you're still married on Dec. 31st.

Married. We got married last November, and our tax lady advised us to file jointly, even though we had only been married a month.

Your tax status depends on your marital status as of the last day of the year - so you'd file for 2007 as married (this assumes of course that you are still married as of the end of the year).

shoredude2
The IRS considers you married or single for the entire year based on your marital status at 11:59pm on December 31.

I would advise you file as married. In the long run, there are quite some benefits that would accrue to you both. Good luck!

talk to a CPA . Everyone should always use a CPA to do their taxes, it is the most secure way to avoid an audit from the IRS.

The options for filing 2007 income tax are determined by your marital status on December 31st, 2007. If you are still married on New Year's Eve, you have several options depending on many factors. You could file:

-Married filing jointly
-Married filing singly
-Single head of household

You really should read the instruction booklet to see your options and the requirements for each.

Congratulations, by the way.

D R
you can file them either way. But it will probably be better to file married

joey322
when we got married, we tried both ways to see which got us more money back.

you can play with it a bit...

Sarah (the bear!)
You will file married if you were married for more than 6 months out of the year.
