I got married in june this year, but my wife's w-2's have her maiden name on them. got any tax-time help?
my wife has all the legality's changed: her social security card; legal name; etc. the only problem is she has not changed her name with her employer- and her w2's came back as her maiden name.... will this create a problem during tax filing? or should i not be panicking about it as much as i am?

As long as SS shows her married name is what is showing on record for her SS#, file the return using what Social Security has recorded as her name. the difference on the W2 will not cause a problem, its what name and social that are used on the return itself that needs to be correct.

If she hasn't changed her name with Social Security, she needs to do that immediately, or use her maiden name on the return.

Not a problem. Just make sure that the name on the TAX RETURN matches the name on her social security card, or an efile will reject. It won't reject if the names on the W-2's are different as long as the social security number is right.

Since your wife has already changed her legal name and her SS# reflects that you should be good to go. As for her employer, she will need to update her information with them.

Not a problem. The IRS goes by social security number only. She does need to get that updated at work though!

No problem. The IRS will check her name with the SSA. As long as the name on the return matches SSA's records and the SSN on her W2 is correct there won't be any problem.

If you're e-filing, you'll be asked if there are any differences in the name and address as shown on the W2. Just provide that information. If you file a paper return, draw a non-obliterating line through her surname on the W2 and print her new surname below it.

Unlikely to be an issue if preparer competent.

as long as her SSN matches her new last name, it won't matter!

this will not be a problem as the IRS checks the SSN against the Social Security Administration Data File to verify the name match. Just use her legal name as it is on record with the SSA and everything will be fine.
