You have the option of filing jointly or married filing single...usually you will receive a larger return filing jointly.

You never have to file jointly, but generally it's in your best interest. You should consult with the person doing your taxes to calculate it both ways.

taxreff
You can either file MFJ or MFS. MFJ is best for the majority of couples.

No, you dont have to file together, BUT it is recommended IF you want more back.

I agree that married filing jointly is generally the best way to go. One thing you might ask is if your parents were or are going to claim you if you lived with them the preceding months before the marriage.

ponek99
its more $$ in your pocket to file mfj

The key date of every year is Dec 31st? What is your martial status as of Dec 31st? Even if you had gotten married on Dec 31st, you could file either Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) or Married Filing Separately (MFS). MFS is the least desirable filing status to use. MFJ will be your best choice.

Tomk
You will get a much larger "joint" refund than if you both file separately. The standard deduction is much much larger for married couples plus you take two exemptions.

Always gives you more total refund.

you never have to file jointly. that's your decision and your spouse's. the only benefit to filing jointly is you get a larger
deduction. the down siode is that if you file jointly you are forever responsible for and tax claims, adjustments of plain stealing the IRS may have decided on. I filed joinly for years and regret it now as i would not have the IRS sending me and my wife nasty, nasty nasty leters of evil intent on their part.
you would be in the long run safer to dile seperately or with one of you as a dependent. this way any jointly owned property owned cannot wholly be stolen 100% by your friendly IRS.(contact your congress representives (state and federal) and demand flat taxes and stop the theif of personal property and belongiongs by the IRS.
