I got my tax rebate / stimulus. WTF?
Where's the rest of the money?
I only got $300 and i'm trying to figurer out why. I made a little more that $10,000 last year(not married, no kids, could not be claimed, blah blah blah) I am also a fulltime student and i thought 10 grand was pretty good for a student. I know I read somewhere that low income individuals are not getting as much but i didn't realize i am in the low income category. This was a bad way to find that out.

Luckily/unfortunately because I live with my parents I don't need the money as much, but what better way to stimulate the economy than to give a college student extra money.

Sorry just needed a little space to rant, but should i really make a case of this or just let it go.

p.s. by case i mean intensive phone calls and not something rediculous as a lawsuit.
Additional Details
Also I didn't have to pay anything back. I refunded more than my expected rebate.

Depends on your tax liability. $600 only goes to those with a tax liabilty greater than that. In alot of cases on here I'm noticing people did not understand that part of the rebate and were expecting $600 to go to everybody. $10,000 is not that high of an income, but still really good for a student. I would say the fact that you are a student and probably got alot of credits and such your tax liability was very low if not zero which of course would result in the minimum $300 rebate. At least you got one!

Poetic Blue
You made 10,000 annually and did not realize that you were in the low income category??????????

Cat
You get $600, or the amount of your tax liability, whichever is LESS. With a minimum of $300.

My guess is that your total tax liability was $300 or less.

if you filed a 1040EZ like me and my husband, you need to look at line 10, this is where you needed to look up in the book what your tax bracket was, and how much you had to pay, They kept 1,453 of our taxes paid through the year and thats why we will recieve 1200, if you paid less than 1200 ( for married filing jointly) or 600 ( for single) then you will not get the max amount for the rebate!!!!!!!!!

If you made $10,000, the most you would have paid in federal income tax was about $128. You only get the maximum $600 rebate if you paid at least that much in tax. Congress decided to give a bonus to low income people and give them more than a "rebate" of the tax they paid, give them at least $300. You paid in around $128 and got $300 back. A single person who made $16,000, hardly a huge salary, paid in over $700 but only got back $600 of it.

All of the official announcements, websites and mailings said "up to" $600 per person, not that everyone would get that much.

clhendrix2
I was caught by surprise on this too....we were expecting $1500 (married w/ 1 child) but only got $900. We apparently just listened to the hype on the news and did not realize that it was "up to" $1500, we thought it was set amounts....We thought wrong.

The way I understand it, you have to have paid a certain amount of taxes in to get that max sum of $600 per person. Now $10,000 "seemingly" should get the "full" refund amount; but on the flip side, I work with people that make over the 75,000 max before they start prorating, and they are complaining that they should get the $600; due to all the taxes that they pay to the Govt! So as you see, the other end of the spectrum is complaining as well. I am working with gratitude today, so anything will be a blessed receipt! Stay in school! I just graduated and I am proud I hung in there with college!

At 10,000 you tax liability would be definitely less than 300. My husband and I made close to 46,000 last year but because of our four children we had zero tax liability so we will each receive 300 for ourselves. You have to pay taxes or have tax liability to qualify for the 600.
