I have a 9 month old son. I have not worked but I want to know if I can file a tax return on him?
I need to know if I can file a tax return even though I have not worked, and I'm a single parent of a child.

Yes, you can file a tax return.
No, you cannot get the EIC (Earned Income Credit) .... note that it is the EARNED income Credit ... which means you have to have EARNED income, i.e. a job, to qualify for it.

So, unless you have earned income, filing a tax return won't get you too far. Also, if the baby's father is paying child support, he "may" qualify to claim your child rather than you ... you will need to check with the appropriate agencies on that.

Another caution ... if you decide to claim money you have earned under the table ... like for babysitting, or selling on ebay, or things like that to qualify for for the EIC, you will also then be liable for taxes and social security taxes on the amounts claimed, so you still won't be gaining anything.

You would have to at least made a dollar to get a refund back for Earned Income Credit.

Uhhh...How exactly would you file? Taxes are taken out of your wages and paid to the government. If you have no income, you paid no taxes, and are therefore not eligible for any sort of return!
Isn't welfare enough?

Do you have any income at all? If not, you don't have anything to file a return on.

You would not be eligible for the Earned Income Credit if you don't have any earned income, which basically means income from working.

If you're getting child support, that's not reportable or taxable.

If you haven't any income how can you file?!?!?!? Unless you are a trust fund baby then yes you can claim your son on a tax return but being that you have paid any taxes....what is the purpose of filing? Also, your son yes can file his own return but being he would have had to pay some taxes so unless your son is another trust fund baby or at least he has been paid out in dividends or royalities then he can file a return.

I have worked at one of the Big 4 and now currently working for one of the nation's 12 most reputable accounting firm (and we are definately so far from H & R Block). Our clients are at least net worthed to be 5M as we charge $450/hr to file returns. So I can guarentee you that filing a return would be absouletly pointless because all there would be a bunch of zeros and you would be just spending your money on sending in your return to the IRS.

yes you can file for the child tax credit. if you didn't work for the entire 06 year you will have to fill out a diffrent form then the normal work force. i dont' know what it is, best is to call a tax preparation place like H&R block or hewitte they will be able to tell you also your local library will have all the forms youll need to file.

????????
Yes. You can file for yourself and your child. It's called " Earned Income Credit."
And it's only for parents with children.
The gov't will pay you for your child.
It's a set amount.
Go to the local library and ask a Reference Librarian to show you the form. It's easy to fill out and there is a booklet that goes with the form from the IRS to explain it and with the chart you'll need and so on. You'll figure it out by April. But you can file right now, so get some info.

Yes you can file him for the 2006 tax session because he was born during the year of 2006.

My mom was born on New Years Day in 1954 so my grandparents couldn't claim her as a dependent for 1953 taxes. I'm sure they wished she was born a day earlier.
