I have a friend who has not filed his tax returns in 7 years.. what should he do?
He was homeless for a while and just gave up on everything.

He should file the tax returns for any missing years that he had income above the filing requirement amount for the year in question.

wartz's answer may be short, and to the point, but it is quite accurate. The key word is "required". Your friend, being homeless, very well might have had quite a low income.

Maybe there aren't any returns required. Maybe only a couple. Maybe a return isn't required for a certain year, but he has a small refund coming because taxes were withheld from a job.

Your friend should call the IRS and ask them to mail him copies of his past W2s for the years he hasn't filed. If he was due a refund for any of these years I think he can still receive it if its within three years. If he owes money for back taxes he could have to pay an additional percentage as a penalty. If he wants to be able to file future returns he needs to take care of the back ones first. However, if he hasn't heard from the IRS in 7 years he probably doesn't need to worry about owing money on a nonfiled return. Good Luck to your friend!!

pray. Calling the IRS can be hard. Sometimes they just aren't very nice esp. if you owe them and haven't filed like your friend. He might need a lawyer or some kind of help in dealing with the IRS. Good luck.

He should file any required returns. Period. Is there a problem with that?

Call the IRS. They should be able to help him.

If he is now employed and can afford to pay for professional help, suggest he contact an Enrolled Agent to help him. Usually, IRS will only require a person to file the last six years' returns to get back in their good graces.

Some communities have free programs to help in such situations. You might contact a local librarian for suggestions.

If your friend needs help in reconstructing his income, he can request a transcript for each of the years from IRS, who will mail them to him or his authorized representative. The important thing is to get started and file the returns, whether or not he can pay any balance due.

well to start with, I definitely would NOT file to get the free money if I were him until I figured out if I owed the government or not. If he was homeless, it is safe to assume that he did not have much in the way of income, so he might have some money coming to him.

However, if he does owe the government, the recent filing might trigger an audit!

I would see about contacting an accountant and asking him for advice (skip H & R block).
