You should contact the Citizens Advice because bailiffs are about as sympathetic as Attila the Hun on a bad day. They won't care that there were others in the house, as far as they're concerned you will be liable for the whole debt. I've been in a similar situation myself. And whatever you do, don't let them into your property or you risk losing your possesions. It's a myth that you have to let them in but it is true that they can let themselves in to an unsecured property, ie open or broken door/window so get yourself to the C.A.B. asap! |

You would have been better off to go to your local CAB and ask for their assistance in this matter. You never know how much more money has been put on top of what you really owe the council by the bailiff company.Don't for get they are a private company trying to make as much money as possible out of you. Asked them to give you a breakdown of the amount owed by you to the council and the additional charges. You have to remember if your name, only, is on the rate bill, you are solely responsible ,but if it is in joint names you are only responsible for the half. |

Check they have a liability order from the magistrates court, bailiffs don't mess about. they add expensive fees to the debt and they can seize your goods.
Joint and several liability means that any party who signed the agreement can be held liable for the whole of the debt and it is up to you to recover the money from the other parties. (they are subrogated creditors to you). If only you signed, no one else is liable.
Speak to the council and try to deal direct with them. If that doesn't work speak to the bailiff before they visit your property. If they don't accept your offer go back to the council and try to make the payment direct to them again. Its a sticky situation and the law is not on your side unfortunately. |

If you have to offer them something fiver a week i dunno but under impression as long as you offer something,it will be sorted.. |

Borrow a few dogs next week. A few cuddly Pit Bulls left in your front room would ensure no-one breaks-in. I'm not sure about English Law but breaking and entry is breaking and entry. No crime (murder, bank job) has been committed you just owe some money. |

They will want a list of your income and expenditure. Arrange to pay the what you can afford, if its only £5 per month they have to accept it, they will tell you they can only take £20 per month but legally if you go to court and tell the court you offered £5 they will tell you they should have accepted it, as long as you offer something with the queens head on it they have to accept - even £1. When doing your income/expend. if you spend £30pw on food you say £40, elect £10, you say £20 ect. I would have discussed it over the phone and not let them into your home. I owe £500 from previous address and they take £5 pm |

You need to make a realistic arrangement but dont pee about with them as they can return the account the Council for further action -some councils will press for committal or bankruptcy on £600. |

Jackie M is correct, as council tax bailiffs are used by the court they are normally fairer than some out there. If you have arranged for them to have an appointment at your home expect them to make a list of items (generally electrical) that they will take if you do not pay your instalments on time. Try and find your old flatmates if you can but don't bank on getting any dough from them, unless their names were on the council tax bill you don't have a leg to stand on. Good luck hope you get it sorted x |
