I have no income, and I've been paying cash into my bank regurlarly, will they get suspicious?
Hi,

Im 18 and I quit my job about 2 months ago and have been living off with what I saved until now. Well to put a long story short I go to the casino every weekend and have been winning quit a lot recently. Obviously because I've been paying cash into my bank, it looks like I have a cash in hand job which isn't being taxed.

Will they get suspicious or take any action against me? If so, how can I prove its just casino winnings?

Thanks

Well done you if you can make money on gambling.

You do not actually have to prove where the money came from, there are a lot of sources where some one could legitimately make unearned income which is not taxed.

You will have a tax allowance of £6030 a year any way so you would have to be doing exceptionally well at a casino to exceed that.

Lottery wins are not taxed either. Nor are premium bond wins and if you placed money on a horse of some such at a bookies your winnings there would be tax paid.

If you are claiming supplementary benefits then large winnings, you would be expected to declare. That is the only area where checks on your income would likely be made.

Will who get suspicious? The banks don't look at our accounts and think "oooh he's out of work and paying money in a regular basis" and even if they did it's none of their business. The only reason the bank may become suspicious is if you make large deposits.
Don't listen to the person below who is pretending to be a taxman.

Maybe you could ask the casino to pay you by cheque

that way you would have a record of the source of the money.

But I do not think a bank would check and see unless you were making big deposits.

In any case the tax question does not arise as an employer could pay you in cash after deducting taxes

if it's less than £10.000 u got nothing to worry about but if there's something else involved which is illegal and u get caught ur bank records will be used against u..wud'nt u get somthing from casino to say so or they'd know u've been there as u keep winning so u say...u pay tax on money in the bank all banks r intrested in is money..y wud they single u out..

You are fine... your bank doesn't care where the money comes from unless you start making deposits above 10K or wire money into accounts in the amount above 10 thousand dollars.

I am glad to hear that somebody is getting some money out of the casinos.... Good Luck.

I've never been to a casino, but surely when you cash in your chips they give you a reciept?

In any case, if the taxman did take an interest (unlikely) it is up to him to prove that you have received the income illegally. They normally do this by following you and taking evidence of your cash in hand work. If they followed you they would see that your story checks out.

Btw, what games do you play? Most casino games are weighted in favour of the house so in the long term you are guaranteed to lose. Please accept this and don't get into financial trouble by thinking that a short-term winning streak will go on for ever.

Depends on how much you are depositing. And you do know that casino wins are taxable income?

Tax man knocking at your door. That would be me. Be afraid. If no receipts you are going to jail.
