First of all... can you afford to repay something to them?
Secondly... if you can.. write to them outlining the plan of payment. Tell them that you are sorry but this is all you can afford to repay right now. Make sure that it is a sum of money that you can afford to repay.
Thirdly.. if you can.. take all letters to the department yourself.. Make them open them in front of you and give a signed copy of the letter for your records as a receipt.. As they might say........they got lost in the post and you don't have proof. This way you have a stamp and they cannot ignore it.

If they are being stubborn .. go to CAB at once take all paperwork with you and other bills etc ask them to help you sort it out. Best of luck..

had same problem, they just dont seem to comunicate with each other.make sure you keep a record of your letters to them

Just get in touch with the council and try to make an arrangement to pay, if they are still demanding payment within 14 days get in touch with CAB, they are great with these matters. Good Luck.

Most outstanding debts cease to be enforcble after 5 years. Sadly, Council tax is an exception- these mothers never go away. However if you offer a reasonable repayment plan (ie within your budget, but not taking the mickey) I believe the council is obliged to accept, as if they took you to court, the court would uphold such an offer. This is is case with debt generally, and I don't think council tax is any different in these cases.

Make them a payment offer!
As long as you don't refuse to pay theres not a court in the country would support them!

Luckily i have never had to pay it but if i had a bill like that i would move again!

You are certainly liable to pay this if what they are claiming is true, I don't think you would want a visit from the bailiffs because that will no doubt be the next step.

My mate owed £1400 in council tax...which he could not pay.
Yesterday the bailiffs called at his house looking for payment ...if not in money..then in goods.
Best to pay up...or lose all your worldly possessions.

There again....a relative had the same problem as you...he was able to broker a deal with the council in that he was able to pay extra on his council tax for so many years until he caught up.

Maz
Yip im afraid you will be liable for them, all you can do is contact the issuing council and arrange a payment plan for them.
