If you are the only person living there you are entitled to a 25% discount but you must notify your local council immediately.

quornandwafflesagain
no you should get a 25% reduction

TAFF
If you are alone you will qualify for a single person discount

snetterton
There are reductions for single people in a property. Contact your local council.

bumbleboi
Lone householders get a single person's discount but it changes as soon as you move anyone in, a partner, lodger etc. If you try and evade it they will get you and backdate it so be honest, on this score it pays.

it doesn't matter whose name the house is in, council tax is based on who lives at the property, if it is just you then you will qualify for a 25%reduction for sole occupancy - check your latest council tax bill to see if it is on, if you have not automatically been given it then just call your local council's council tax department and let them know that you live alone, they will then adjust your bill.

no if you're living on your own you can get a reduction on your council tax. I think also living on your own is that you do not have someone to stay longer than 3 consecutive evenings (but that I'm not to sure about)

make sure that if someone starts living with you that you let the council know as you could end up with a pretty hefty bill.

look up you local council website they have all the answers to you council tax questions. quite good information.

Well this is actually dependant on your employment status. If you are fully employed then a 25% discount may apply so long as you live alone, as soon as you take on a lodger you will both be liable for the full amount so if this happens then ensure you notify your local council tax office.

Alternatively, if you are in full time education (a student) you should be exempt from council tax and will have to get proof from your place of study to ensure this goes through.

Mind you, given you have just bought a house I'd say you're not a student! Either way your safest route is to contact your local council office to be certain.

technocase
25% discount applies.

if you own your house and you are the only adult (over 18) you will get a 25% discount on your council tax. if you receive income support you do not have to pay council tax at all. it is advisable to make a claim for council tax benefit anyway but you will definately get 25% discount

Doreen
I live in the Scotland and have my own house. As I'm the only person living in it I get 1/3 off my council tax. It doesn't matter who's name the house is in it depends on how many people live in it. Hope this helps and contact your local council for confirmation.

arethusa_lad
The question isn't how many names are on the deeds, it is how many people are living in the house. When my wife died my council tax was reduced as I then became the only one living in my house. Go to your local council offices and ask someone with the authority to tell you what you should be paying, If it is too much and you get a rebate, can I come to the party?

If your property is under single occupancy,,,you are entitled to a 25% discount on your council tax. Just phone your local council and ask for the benefits section...they will do it all for you!

Congratulations on your new home!

amtusS
not unless you live/ occupy it if you are renting it , the tenant is responcible. however if you live there on your own you will get a rebate for single occupancy, you may also get some rebate if you are registered as disable, as well if your income is low according the rules of housing benefit, check it with your local council. good luck as a home owner.

hi there, you may get a single occupancy reduction (depending on your area band and income bracket) just enquire with your local council and they will be able to give you all the details you need.

good luck in ur new home!

If you are a single person living alone, many councils give a twenty five percent discount to the householder, but either way you are solely responsible for payment. Good luck
