I have started being self employed in Nov 07, after working for a company, when do I pay tax?

Additional Details
As a part-qualified accountant I should know, but want to check as I know that the penalties are harsh. I was under the impression that in the first year you don't have to make a payment on account, but in the following years you have to pay 50% (based on estimate) on 31/01 in tax year, 50% on 31/07 after tax year and the balance remaining on 31/01 after tax year. Class 4 N Iis paid at the same time. Class 2 NI is paid quarterly or month.

any more foul language and i'll report you....

Other answerers seem to be wrong. Your first tax will need to be paid by 31 Jan 09, not 08.

Onestep downfrom God
The tax due for 2007/08 is due for payment in full in January 2009.
Also due at that time will be the first (of two) instalment on account of 2008/09, which will be 50% of the total tax due for the previous year. Second 50% is due before 31/07/09.

taxed till i die,
April08.

At the end of the tax year April 5th..All tax returns should be in by the end of this month thou 31st Jan so you will then know what you tax bill is...

My Grain
Yep,same situation. After March although they're not that easy to do.I went in to tax office with all my details and got them to do it and give me a rough estimate.Warning though is they bomb you for tax in advance for the next year aswell-the ba$tards. This is so the government get interest on our money instead of us!

Master Stig
make sure you are registered with national insurance otherwise you could be in for a penalty - also get in touch with the inland revenue so they can send you a tax return - yu should start paying tax in this april - but of course what you have already paid in paye tax will be taken into account - good luck

Peco
put some cash in the bank for tax at a high interest rate
about a quarter of earnings will cover things
save all your bills and receipts
if you have a dog save the bills for it...its a guard dog
employ your wife as secretary to get that allowance

then when the bill comes you got money to pay it and some left over

put some away in a pension plan and health plan

get an accountant he will save you money and sort out Mr Taxman for you .. he gets a share of the money he saves you

Cash jobs are handy no receipts or bills but be careful to only take it from people you know wont report you and keep it in a seperate account ...taxman loves anomilies

First have you registered with the tax office, if so they will send you the forms you will need to file in plenty of time. You will find there is nothing generally to pay in the first year as nobody can say how much you will earn in the first year, that is until you produce your financial records. The norm would be to see how well you do over the first six months and double it to try and estimate how much tax you will then have to pay. But for your own sake keep receipts for every thing related to your business. and decent records of your dealings. make sure you know what your entitlements are before you send in your figures so you can put in a claim for them. Things like a new computer system etc are all deductible and depending on your work you even get a clothing allowance, if in doubt claim for it, if they don't agree they just subtract it. The most important thing is to find an excellent accountant first. They will put you on the right track and are worth the money but ask around don't just accept the first one you see. Make sure you set aside at least 25% of your earning capital for the tax man from day one, then you won't have to much to worry about. But watch out how much you earn because the higher figure you earn I think it's around £38K means you could be liable for V.A.T which is another problem, thats why you need an accountant to cover your rear because they dig very deep into your pockets. I don't know what business you are running but it may be a good idea to set it up as a limited company first, see what your account says?
Lastly I wish you every success because the first year is always hardest.
