Well it does no good to tell her she's broken the law - it sounds like the government owes HER money anyway. Yes you can still get your back taxes done and get it all figured out.

You need to go to the IRS yourself and ask them to help you get your taxes right and get on a payment plan, and be nice.

When you said "years" how many years are you talking about? Are we talking about Individual Tax Returns here? I'm guessing so. When you said you have a lot owing - are you referring to HECS? Or the actual income tax?
Either way - there will be late lodgment penalty, of course. My personal advice is Don't stress too much about it, our ATO is not IRS. We are dealing with real people with compassion in Australia.
If you (maybe via a tax accountant or agent, if you don't want to deal with them direct) lodge the tax returns and show that you really intend to start everything good, they won't do anything too extreme. If you end up having to pay (due to penalty etc), and can't afford it, get into a payment arrangement with them, direct debit or something. Try to pay it all off in 2 years (24 months). Don't go default on the arrangement.

You need to see a tax accountant if you've been out of the tax system for a number of years (there have been many complex changes in Australia's tax laws this decade) and don't expect them to "get something back" if you think you owe a lot of tax. That's not their role.

A good tax accountant (that is, one who isn't dodgy and lets you get audited) is one who can legally minimise the tax you owe. They will represent you so you don't have to deal with the tax office personally (except to negotiate your own tax payment plan perhaps). Good luck finding a tax accountant who will want to deal with someone so negligent as to get years behind in their tax and expect to be required to pay some of their fees upfront.

hopefully your on salary and wages so you have paid some tax. If you have your paper work you can do the forms yourself and save the expense of an accountant. If your unsure of anything talk to the tax department. They are a free number to ring and are helpful. Meanwhile you can organise for your employer to deduct more tax out of your weekly pay. Persevere and get your paper work done . It Willl take time but you wil learn a lot by doing it and it is something you need to do otherwise it will haunt you if not worse !

What you need is a tax lawyer, not an accountant. What ever you do don't talk to the Australian version of the IRS your self. Let the lawyer make the first approach.

you broke the law, you pay. You are an Ex-Patriot to your country and you should be a shame to yourself. Cheaters never get away on rare occasions they do, often a lot they never get away.

Here's a ittle advice you shouldve paid in the first year and shouldnt cheat your countrymans.
