I haven't done my taxes yet!!! Can I do it today and send it out without penalty?
How do you get an extension?

It's too late for an extension. That had to be filed by midnight on Tuesday.

If you have a refund coming there won't be any penalty for late filing.

If you have a balance due there will be a penalty for late filing as well as interest and penalties for late payment of tax.

It is too late to file for an extension today. There is one exception; it is living in the east coast where the storm was. You have until today to file.

If you do not owe any money, you can file a claim for refund within two years.

If you have a refund coming, you can do it today, or even next year or later, without a penalty. If you owe, there will be a penalty.

You would have had to apply by yesterday for an extention.

If you don't owe it's OK. If you do owe money definitely do it soon and send the money. It should be OK.

Wolf Harper
It was officially due yesterday, except for some people on the East Coast who were affected by weather.

An extension would also have to have been filed yesterday :(

But millions of people still file on paper, so the centers that process paper returns are getting truckloads this week. How closely do they check postmarks this week? I do not know.

There's no direct penalty for late filing, but there are penalties for late paying if you owe money.

We have until tomorrow at midnight to file as we were hit with the Nor'easter up here in New England. We were granted an no cost extension. We were told to mark April 16 storm on our paperwork.

Do it today!

If you owe money, you will be penalized for failure to file and failure to pay.

But the sooner you get this in, the lower the penalties will be, if those penalties apply.

Just try it and see what happens. Cross your fingers.

Yes. IRS has extended the deadline for two days due to recent storms. If filing on paper, write "April 16 Storm" across the top. You have until tomorrow (4/19/2007) at midnight, but it might be difficult to get it postmarked late in the evening.

I don't think it's possible at this point, you'll get a fine for wasting time here at Answers instead of doing so!
