I haven't filed income Tax for 18yrs?
I would like to go back and straighten out my taxes. I have been employed and have had taxes deducted from my earnings, but never filed or requested a refund. For the first couple of years I got letters, but have not recieved one for at least 15yrs, Though I have been employed for lenghty periods and have had stable addresses, My employers or myself do not recieve letters. I have been told by a few Tax professionals that I do not hear from the IRS because they probably owe me money, and that I should just file for the past 3yrs. I will qualify for Social Secirity in 5yrs. and would like to get all this settled. I would appreciate any advice that someone might have on how to go aabout doing this.
Sincerely and Thanks for any imfo,
Little Tree

As a matter of policy enshrined in the IRS manual, they will not solicit more than six years worth of delinquent returns unless there is fraud. Negligence is not fraud.

Call IRS at 800-829-1040 and it can provide you an information returns transcript with all the W-2's and 1099's you have received for the last six years.

If you have a refund due, the return must be filed within three years of the original due date or the statute of limitations for claiming the refund expires. For now, this means returns for 2004 and later.

Similarly, if you have self-employment income, it must be reported within three years of the original due date or the statute of limitations for having your Social Security account credited expires but you will still owe the self-employment tax.

I suspect that if you owe anything, the amount will be low or IRS would have been in contact with you before now.

The girl is a geek.
You need to talk to a tax preparer and possibly a tax attorney about getting this fixed. It could effect your social security payments!

People who own money HAVE to file every year.
People who are owed money do not have to file every year. People who are owed less than $100.00 and do not need the money NOW, should wait for the next year.
And yes, some people will file for a refund even if it is for only $0.01.
You can file every 3 to 5 years (it saves the taxpayers' money when you do it this way also).
If you can the right paper you can file for the last 5 years not just the last 3 years.
I do not file unless I owe or am owed $1000 or more.
You ONLY go to jail for NOT PAYING taxes.
If you are owed a refund, it is because you OVER PAID your taxes.
If you are owed money you WILL NOT go to jail for not filing.
The government does not like issuing refunds and WILL NOT go after you if THEY owe you money.

You need to find a [ IRS registered agent ] to help answer this question. You are facing some fines and penalties but, since you have been paying all along you shouldn't have to deal with interests being added and you may get a good sum of money back.

If you do not have the last 3 years of tax records, go to your employer and request them to send them out to you...go to an H&R block in your area and explain the situation. They should be able to assist you with telling you if you owe or if you are going to get money back. What you decide from there is your own business...but don't let the government not give you money...

Some federal prisons are not too bad, especally if you never did any violent crimes. I would try not to tell the other inmates too much about yourself at first. Try to find someone who is popular around the cellblock and try to figure out why the other inmates like them.
