I haven't filed my taxes for 3 years! Help! Please!?
I'm 22 years old, single and I work as a server. My tips are claimed, I don't own a house or have any kids. I have never filed my taxes but this year I want to get started. I really hope I don't owe the government any money! I don't know where to start or who to turn to. I heard H &R Block is spendy and it's possible to do it yourself. Can someone please help me/give me advice?

Don't feel bad, lots of people don't file for 3 years at a time. Have you been getting letters from the IRS saying that you owe XXX$$$ or have you been getting letters asking you to file your tax returns for those years? If they are asking you to please file the returns, you probably have a refund due each year. If they are telling you that you owe XXX$$$ that means that they have figured out what you should owe appx. $$$$ and penalties and interest have been accruing from day one.
If you'be been getting threatening letters from them, go to a tax professional and have them do them. You will need to sign a power of attorney with them so that they may communicate with the IRS on your behalf. But also know, that most tax professional may require a retainer of $50-$125 upfront per year that you are behind.
If you are getting letters from the IRS just asking you to file your return, that probably means that you have a refund coming and they want you to file so that they can give you your money. If you are sure that you have ALL of your W-2s and 1099's for all those years, then just go online to www.irs.gov and download the forms and instructions that you need to file those tax returns. You should only need to file a 1040EZ if all you have is w-2's. It will take you longer to download the forms and instructions than what it will take you to actually do them. File your 2004 first because if you don't have it filed by 4/15/08 and you have a refund due, you will forfeit it. So depending on the type of letters that you've been getting from the IRS, either get to a tax professional or start downloading. You'll be okay either way. If you can put up with your customer and balance your cash drawer every night, believe me, you can do your taxes.
I've been a professional tax preparer for over ten years. If you run into any problems, just let me know.

If your income is below, say, $35,000, go the IRS website and see where the nearest taxpayer assistance center is. They will help you do the taxes for free.

You can also search on VITA.

I wouldn't suggest you do this yourself. It might cost a bit of money but I think it will save you money, time, stress in the long run. Contact H&R Block and some other firms for a quote of what they would charge to help you.

Go to www.irs.gov - they have free online tax preparer links that you can use if your income is under a certain amount. I've been filing my taxes for a few years this way and it's a lot easier than when I had to fill out all the paperwork myself!

Plus, the forms know the ins and outs to saving you more money.

OK, take a deep break and get started. Were you claimed as a dependent by anyone else in any of those years? Parents? Were you living alone or at home? Were you full time student.
Sounds like simple returns you could do yourself.
First Q: Did you earn enough money that you needed to file?
For example 2006: did you earn more than $8450? 2007 > $8750? It may be advantageous to file to get back some of your withholding even when not required to file.
Get your W-2s and the tax forms, probably 1040EZ and file. You can file 2007 online, but the others will have to be mailed. IF you owe for 2007, Advise you to mail the others and wait a month, as they likely won't give you your refund without having filed prvious years if they think you should have. For refunds, you have to file within 3 years--so get oldest done before 4-15. If you owe, they can go back farther.
irs.gov has lots of forms and information
library has tax forms for current year, maybe prior

You have 5 years to file, then the IRS will find you....
Get Turbo Tax and do it yourself and never have to pay
again. If you do owe, the IRS will allow you to make
payments....low ones...and if you make an arrangement
with them, don't renege, because they play fair if you do...
Get the taxes filed now and at least you know if you owe.
By not doing so, you will accumulate interest on money
owed to the IRS.....

You need professional help. You will have penalties and interest on any taxes due. Even if you are paid in full there are penalties for not filing your taxes.

Don't cheese out. Pay for good help, then keep currentin the future.

HR Block is expensive. I dont mine this year myself..but I have filed my taxes every year. have you worked in the last 3 years? If you make a certain amount of money you have to file every year. I think you might want to consult someone before doing it yourself. Ty to find a private cpa in your area, they are alot cheaper.

You can probably file a 1040EZ form, which is easy to do. I would call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask for their advice. They have been very nice to me in working out payment arrangements, and they can explain things to you. They may have been the boogeymen in years past, but they are kinder and gentler now and they know it's easier to get compliance with honey than with vinegar. You can access their website for forms, and they can mail them to you as well, whichever is easier. Do not be afraid, but if you don't start coming into compliance, it could be a criminal charge years from now, which is why I said to call them before they call you. Good luck!

Why Me??? Seriously!
Dont go to H&R Block! Do some research, call around. I wouldnt recommend doing them yourself although a good friend of my swares by TurboTax. Find a Tax company in your area that has a good reputation. But stay away from big names like H&R,J Hewitt,et. they tend to charge alot and arent always on YOUR side.

As a 22 year old server, chances are good that your income was low enough that you didn't owe any taxes for the years you didn't file. If that's true, the good news is that you won't owe any penalties for the years you didn't file. You would only be in trouble if you owed taxes and didn't file a return. The IRS will help you for free if your income is fairly low, but check in to the possibility of a good tax professional, not just the H&R Block people at Walmart this time of year. It could be money well spent, because a professional is better equiped to help you find every cent that is owed to you.
