Get blank forms and complete returns for six years, not 10. IRS will only ask for six as a matter of policy. I doubt you will owe anything or IRS would have sent you a nastygram. If you have refunds for years 2004 or earlier, the statute of limitations for claiming them has expired so kiss them goodbye.
If you have a refund for 2005 and a balance due for 2006 or 2007, request that the refund be applied to the next year's estimated tax because that way it will be posted as of 04/15/06 instead of the actual processing date thus saving you years of penalty and interest.

Were you working on a W-2, or did you have your own business? If a W-2, you just need to collect your info and file the returns - if you owed anything, the IRS would know it and would have billed you a long time ago. You have forfeited any refunds older than tax year 2005.
If you had your own business, then you need to find your records for those years - I'd suggest taking them to a CPA or Enrolled Agent for help in completing the back returns. |

Get started. Grab your w-2s, get the applicable forms and mail them to IRS. Can only efile current year, meaning 2008 starting second week of January.
Making more than $8000 means you were probably required to file and guilty of tax evasion. However if IRS hasn't been chasing you, your withholding may have been such that you would have received a refund. No refund after 3 years, so do last 3 years first, to snag any possible refunds. However IRS may or may not pay out refunds immediately, if you haven't filed prior year's taxes. Just because they won't pay any refunds you would have earned doesn't excuse you from filing those other years.
You'll feel SO much better when you've finished this. |

I would contact IRS and see what returns are not on file with the IRS. I would take the last three years. 2007, 2006, 2005 and file those returns. You can contact IRS and get a transcript for those years and a history on your account. The transcript and history should be no charge They may ask you to file IRS form 4506-T for the years you need transcripts.
If you owed money in those years, you are liable. If you are due refunds , then they have to send them to you.
Don't look for trouble. Just work with the last 3 years. If you know how to prepare them, then do it. If not, seek a professional. |

You start by filing 2001-2007.
The forms are available at IRS.GOV.
Note, you won't get a refund for 2004 or earlier unless you were in a coma, in a disaster area or a combat zone. |

First step is to contact the IRS and find out what years they are looking for. (They may not even be aware of all ten years)
Next, you'll need to file for each of those years.
Only then will they total up what you owe (+ penalties and interest) and work out a payment plan. The payment plan will be based on your disposable income. They'll take all of your important bills into consideration (cable, and internet don't count) then find a montly payment that fits around that.
Don't go hiring one of those Tax attournies on TV. (They're a rip off, and most of the time they can't save you any money....they're not miracle workers.)
I'd suggest going to a tax specialist. They talk to the IRS all the time, so they aren't intimidated. They're good with all the terminology, and they know what forms need to be turned in. They can walk you through the proccess from start to finish. Let them speak to the IRS on your behalf. It's a scary proccess, but having an expert on your side makes it a lot better.
Sometimes it takes the IRS a long time to come after you. If you think you owe money, it's better to come forward on your own. It sucks to owe money, but it's a load off your back to at least know your're on your way to being square. |

You are required to file all the past tax returns where your income exceeded the filing rquirement.
Start one by one. Start with 2007 tax return and file.
You need to file if your income from all sources exceeds your standard deduction plus your exemption deduction. If you are single and no one claims you as dependent, then this amount for 2008 is $8,950 ($5,450 + $3,500). If your total income is less than $8,950, then you you are not required to file the return.
You must file if your self employment income is $400 or more. Read 2008 filing requirements for most taxpayers http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/10/2008-filing-requirements-for-most.html |

Wow, Well my hunny didnt file taxes for 10 years and it was a big mess. I am a tax guru, all from hands on and well I got him out of all of it. I worked on his taxes for two weeks straight. I was a little leary in what the IRS was going to tell me or reject his returns. And it turned out that I did everything right, really proud of myself. His balance is in the positive and we can sleep at night now lol. Goodluck to you, it can be done and dont let them tell you different. If you have a questions feel free to ask. :) |
