I heard a rumour that "everyone" will be getting an extra tax refund this year in the USA. $600? True or False
A few different people have told me to expect an extra $600 in addition to whatever I shelled out in Federal income tax this year. I am married, filing jointly, and my husband didn't work last year.

Will there be an extra tax refund (supposedly this so-called extra refund is issued separately)?

I have a feeling it's a poorly planned rumour!

I hope someone can clarify.

It's not a rumor. A rebate bill has passed the House and is awaiting action by the Senate.

Under the terms of House bill, the amount of the proposed rebate depends on how much taxes you paid on your 2007 return. If you are married filing jointly, you would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $1200 if you paid that much in Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $750 in taxes (less than the $1200 rebate limit), you only get back $750.

If you had over $3000 in earned income, you would qualify for the $300 minimum rebate.

If you are eligible for any rebate, you also receive $300 for each dependent child.

The rebate will be issued separately from any refund you may receive on your 2007 Federal Income Tax.

Nothing has passed Congress yet, so everything is subject to change.

Undetermined. The President and leaders of the House got together and cooked up a proposal to do this, for the purpose of stimulating the economy. But the Senate isn't anxious to go along with the House bill, and any changes which get made to it risk a veto.

I heard that they would start sending it out Starting May so you should receive in june.

It ranges from $300 to $1,200 for filers that made up to $83,000 for 2007. Nothing is etched in stone yet.

I heard this too... that it was somewhere between $300 and $600. I am not sure that this has moved past anything more than a discussion at this point, but I know you need some minimum income to receive this money. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

I have heard that it's a tax rebate, so tax payers would get something. Nothing has been passed yet, and the Democrats want non-tax payers to get a tax rebate, which makes no sense. So basically it's neither true or false at this point.

It is still a tentative rebate.. a married filing jointly couple will get $1200 regardless if both worked.. it is per tax payer. A dependent will also get $300 per dependent. Best Wishes.

Nothing has been signed into law as of today.

It probably won't come to be, as it was not well received in the Senate.

The deal is that we would have to take out another loan with another foreign government (probably China) to finance the give-away and the last "rebate" was mainly spent on consumer goods made in foreign countries (mainly China). So, it does not really help the US economy.

False, it's not a refund it's a stimulus, and it hasn't been approved through all necessary parties yet so don't count on it just yet. More than likely it'll pass and should be distributed around May or June of this year. The bad news is that it will be counted as 2008 income and you will be required to list it as income on your taxes filed in 2009.
