When you send in your tax return has nothing to do with how much money you get back. In fact if you send it in late all you are doing is leaving money that technically belongs to you in the hands of the government allowing them to earn interest on your money. However if you owe money on your tax return you will get penalties and interest added on to it. Depending on the amount you owe that can be quite a lot of money since the IRS charges a large interest rate. If you do find that you owe money and are unable to pay it by April 15th than you can file an extension which will give you a bit more time. If you have any questions about this check out the IRS website, www.irs.gov, and they should be able to better answer your questions.

If you send in a request for refund late (after the due date of the return), the refund will have interest added to it. This may be what you heard.

While the stimulus package will estimate your 2008 income/situation from your 2007 tax return, it will do it sooner if you have already filed when they start running the computer program.

Alternately, some very popular credits couldn't be filed until today at the earliest.
