I heard that the US government is taxing us illegally and that no one really has to pay taxes. Is this true?

No, it is not. There are a number of whack jobs in prison for failure to pay their taxes, claiming that they are illegal. That should be enough to convince any reasonably intelligent person that their claims are false.

First off, The Constitution gave the government the right to raise taxes as needed to run the country. It did include a prohibition on income taxes but the 16th Amendment to the Constitution gave the government the rigth to levy taxes on incomes. Subsequent to the ratificaton of the 16th Amendment, Congress passed Title 26 of the US Code which implemented income taxes.

While some have claimed that there was some funny business in the ratification of the 16th Amendment -- and there may have been -- the courts have repeatedly held that the Amendment was properly ratified and the implementing legislation was therefore valid.

U.S. Constitution: Sixteenth Amendment
Sixteenth Amendment - Income Tax

Amendment Text
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, ...lots of people don't believe this amendment, but most of them are or were in jail for not paying. Good enough reason for me, jail cells are not tastefully decorated enough for me.

cork
Tell that to president Abraham Lincoln who instituted the federal income tax. Also to Fed Judge and IRS when they
are trying you in court.

sprydle
Been hanging out with radical libertarians eh?

Sorry the income tax was made into law a century ago...pay up.

sure it's true
never pay taxes again
and then see what happens to a non paying tax protester
google the idoit Irwin Shift
he was a famous guy who espoused the no pay taxes idea
he's in jail now and owes somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.7 million dollars ( and remember taxes owed escape bankruptcy )

redunicorn
No this is not true. The income tax is legal and if you don't pay it, you will go to jail.

Neil
Well, whether it's legal or not, you have to. You can fight this in the courts if you want. But until the courts say otherwise, you're required to pay taxes.

Hee Hee Hee. Then I woke up and I swear I saw a big rabbit talking to Alice.

I think at least Dr. Phill would be telling us how to sign up for this if it was true. Nearly a billion people in the states and you think this would be a secret that we are just now finding out?

I dont want to burn bridges so if this is true please fill us all in. I sure could use a tax break.

As far as I know, and they may have put it into law now, the Government Taxes that they take out of your wages or earnings were only intended to be temporary. During one of the Wars, the US Government received permission to tax us in order to rebuild the economy in our country. Like everything corrupt in politics, our
Government never rescinded that taxation. Now, they say you can go to prison for not paying taxes. I have not looked into this deeply but I don't think that it was originally intended to keep going. Copy and paste the provided link. It may be informative to you.
