1869 | I just found out that I owe 18,000 in taxes for 2004-05. My exwife did not file for us. Anything I can do? |

Your ex-wife did not file for you. Did you file for yourself? It was kind of your responsibility also to get that done. And now it will be your responsibility to pay the tax. You may still need to file a joint return with your ex-wife so you might want to be really nice to her. If you are the only one with income the IRS will come down on you if you do file jointly. So you may wish to file separately. It may be time to go see a tax professional. |

Other than file, and pay what you owe including interest and penalties? No, sorry. |

if you're filing a joint return - how could you not know you didn't sign the joint return as required - how could you owe so much? - better make a payment plan deal with the IRS or they will garnish your wages big time |

If you had been a good taxpayer in prior years and always filed and paid on time then you can ask your IRS agent/officer whoever your contact person in the IRS is for them to remove the interest and penalties. The may just remove some of the interest and penalties, but some is betterr than none and pay them....but Just so you know the IRS is calculating the amount you owe as a worst case senario. They are using standard deductions not itemized and this can make a huge difference if you normally itemize. I would get a CPA to help you. Hope this helps! |

Unfortunately, owing the IRS is like owing anybody, but worse. They have the same means to get the money as everybody else who collects back debts, plus a few extra. So the best advice is to file and pay. If you don't have the means to write an $18000 check when you file, pay what you can and they will set up installments for you.
If you wait too long, they start putting liens on your property or even seizing and selling it. But as long as you are on installments and keep current with those plus your other current year taxes, they won't get that nasty. Remember, the longer you wait and the longer the installments are spread out, the more interest you will be paying. So finding ways to pay them off quicker might make sense - home equity loan so you can deduct the interest, etc. |

You need to take the IRS correspondence and your income documents to a tax preparer. There may be deductions or credits available. Your filing status may be a factor as well.
If you want, you can retain your preparer to represent you to the IRS. You will not have to deal with the IRS directly. In order to represent you, the preparer would have to be qualified by the IRS (attorney, CPA, EA).
For tax less than $25,000 the IRS normally agrees to a payment plan. |

Were these tax returns that the IRS filed for you? If so, you may owe less money if your file original returns for those years. For example, if you have any dependents to claim or if you itemize your deductions, your return will look much different the one the IRS prepared. This is because they would have only given you one exemption and the standard deduction. On the other hand, if that's how you would have filed anyway it wouldn't make any difference. You'll just have to bite the bullet and pay or make arrangements to pay. |
