a new day
I just got married. What last name should I use to file my tax returns for this year?
This may be a stupid question, but do I use my married name or my maiden name? I ask because I still get checks from work with my maiden name and have not changed my bank account yet. However, I just changed my last name. Since our marriage is so recent, should I just file with my maiden name to avoid confusion? Thanks!

There is no stupid questions.

The name you will use is the name you have on your at the social security administration. If you have changed your name with the SS then you must use your maiden name, because if you use your married name on your tax return IRS will delay the processing and refund because they will send you a letter stating your name and SSN don't match.
If you have changed it with Social Security office then use your new last name.
Congrats.

It should be whatever is on your current social security card and drivers license.

Your name on your tax return should match your name with the Social Security Administration.

If you changed it with the SSA, used your married name on the return.

Congrats!!! I assume you'll be filing a joint return with your spouse? The IRS is fickle and using two different names could cause a refund delay. I would take your marriage certicifate to the Social Security office and change your name on it, then change the name on your driver's license and finally have your employer change your name and your bank accounts.

Whatever is on your most recent social security card - they check against ss records, and it has to match. If you have already changed it with ss, then use your new name on your tax return. If you haven't changed it yet with ss, use your old name. Don't change it with ss within a month or so before filing - that could cause confusion.

If you're going to assume your husband's last name, do it all the way - otherwise you'll have endless confusion. Drivers license, Social Security, bank accounts, vehicle registrations, credit cards, etc. all need to be changed.

This same situation happened to me a couple years ago. I got married Jan 7th and filed my taxes about a month or two after that. I filed them with my maiden name because everything I had (except my drivers license) had my maiden name.

yes.. you should just file w/ ur maiden name to avoid confusion... it will be way better and so then u dont have to do everything just to change it...
