I would go to the council and get this checked out. For a flat this is extremely expensive!

I`m sure that there probably has been a mistake, at the most it would be likely to be around £100 a month.

Go to the council ASAP and tell them you think there is a problem, explain your circumstances, and they should be able to help you.

do you live in a mansion

Contact the local Authority rates dept. They are used to such problems. If you are unable to afford the sum demanded, you might qualify for Income Support. No stigma to IS, it's a right!

No the council wont help my advice is quit your job, sell your house, pretend you have just come to UK and need housing and benefits and all your financial woes will be over - trust me you'll be laughing.

You could apply for countil tax benefit, it applies if you have a lower income. you may have to pay some towards your bill, but the council may pay some as well. It's worth applying, you wont have much to lose.

Geez that does sound way too expensive.
I come from Scotland SNP will scrap this tax very soon and replace it with a couple of pence more on income tax. How simple is that , a much fairer system where the high earners are not subsidised by the low paid.
I think the whole of Britain should pay this way.

You could try looking at your local councils web site - if you find the right link you may be able to check out the council band for your property and the other houses and flats close to you. Then you would see if you are paying the same or more than places the same size as yours.

you must live in a big house or do you owe them anything from last year

If you can't afford to pay your council tax they will send bailiffs they are very nasty i know it happened to my Friend so try raising some extra money by asking your Friends and family even if they gave you like just 5 pound each maybe it would help you could try ringing them but you know what these people are like though they don't care about the people they just care about the money they get of the people
