You can still claim yourself. You better file your own taxes too!

It means that the $3500 exemption goes the person who provides more than half of your support. Since you live with her, the odds are you are NOT supporting yourself.
If you make wages of $5450 or more, then it's an issue.

If you do not provide over half of your own support, and you live with her, she can claim you. Since the value of housing and household expenses is part of your support, unless you pay her substantial rent you are probably not providing half of your own support.
If she claims you, you can still file your own return, but just can't claim yourself.

She can claim your exemption which gives her a tax deduction. You will still need to file though if you make a sizable income. You just won't claim your exemption/deduction.
It might seem unfair at first that she gets the deduction, but it is overall better for the both of you as she is likely to be taxed at a higher rate since she likely makes more money.

If your mother have you as a dependent, you still have to file but you cannot claim your personal exemptions (which your mother will claim). You are left with the standard deductions.
My advise is for you and your mother to compute which is more beneficial for both of you.

To claim a child as a tax deduction means that they are getting a tax incentive for having a child in her house hold. Unless she is claiming that you have worked for her and have received a wage in which case you have to claim taxable income. Either way you still have to file taxes if you are working.

It depends on how much money you earned. If it's less than $5000 or so, you'll pay no tax whether you claim yourself or not. If that's the case, let your mom claim you - it saves you money - and then don't claim yourself on your own return.

If you are a dependent, you can not file your tax return.
