The situation is nuts. I am in the same situation. I claim credits for N.I. because I am not entitled to the money(as I have a partner that works), but I still have to pay for the 6 lots of meds I need for my illness. I also claim DLA - - which also, contrary to popular belief, does not allow me to claim my meds either. |

Incapacity Benefit is paid instead of Income Support because you've obviously worked & paid into the system. Incapacity Benefit is paid at a higher rate than Income Support which is why you don't qualify for free prescriptions but you could apply to get a reduction due to a low income if your only receiving Incapacity Benefit, you'll need HC1 form give this number a ring & speak to the experts 0845 850 1166 |

Incapacity benefit is provided to people who are employed but unable to work through ill Health or Injury.
Income support is for unemployed people who need financial assistance |

Incapacity Benefit means you have an illness/condition which prevents you from working, Income Support is for people who are physically fit to work, but haven't got a job. I was on Income Support as a single parent but am now working, my Mum claimed Incapacity Benefit when she couldn't work because she'd had an operation on her knee. |

You are put on incapacity benefit if you have an illness/disability that prevents you from doing physical work, Income support is for individuals who haven't got a job, either because they can't find a suitable one or have been made redundant in their previous job, but are still able to work as they don't suffer from an impairment, if you don't have a severe disability and you feel that you shouldn't be classed as such and you are able to do some work, then you should be on income support, I know of several people without disabilities that have been put on Incapacity benefit and goodness knows why as they are physically able to work and have nothing wrong with them, plus they are still fairly young, you get more privileges on incapacity benefit, such as you can stay on it indefinitely as you have been "written off", income support you have to come of it relatively quickly and take on a job they offer you otherwise your benefit money is taken away, unless told otherwise by the DHSS and as long as you CAN'T work you will remain on incapacity benefit long term, people who have temporarily hurt themselves so much so that they can't work will go on Incapacity benfit intially but when they are better if they haven't found a job, they will then be given temporary Income support. |
