missthang1960 | I live in Oregon and I can't afford to pay someone to do my taxes? |
And I have never done them before myself. I had a tax preparer do my 2006 but when she was finished I couldn't afford to pay her so she filed an extension for me. I don't know what to do because I left my husband last year but we are still married but separated and living in different homes. Our 2 son's ages 24 and 18 years live with me and they both have jobs so they will also have to file. Any suggestions? |

I've always found Turbotax to be the easiest way to do my taxes. They walk you through the process and under certain circumstances (low income, military) it is completely free and you can do all of it online without having to buy the software and they file your federal and state together. Even if you don't qualify for the free service, it's probably the cheapest way to go besides sitting down and filling out all the forms yourself.

Oftentimes different cities have free tax clinics for lower income people. ..Don't know the definition of that "lower income" amount or where you even stand financially, but you could see if this is a possibility in your area.
If you trust them you may also be able to find a college student who has done taxes before and would like more experience to do them for free.
You could see if you could use a free version of tax software somewhere.
Or you could read all the information you could on state and federal taxes and just do them yourself.
Good luck! |

Try TaxAct.com. You can file for free but in the end they take a small percentage. A friend did her refund yesterday and she was getting back close to $900 and in the end they took close to $24. So nothing too drastic.
Its step by step easy answer questions. I would give it a try. Your boys can definitely help you as well.
Much luck! |

First of all, there are several places that will help people with low incomes to do their taxes. They're really not that hard to do once you determine which form you will need to file. Do you own your own home? Obviously, your kids are old enough to file their own taxes so you will not be able to count them as dependents. You would probably file 1040A tax form and make sure that you choose the box, married filing separately. I've never helped anyone do taxes that are in your situation but your wages, salary and tips would be all you would put down for your income. But, do you have a savings account and did you draw any interest from it? This would need to be recorded. Did you file for unemployment? If so, did you have federal and state taxes taken out? Did you cash in an IRA, or 401K? These are things that you would need to enter on the tax form. If you need more help, email me and I'll gladly help you out....ohkeecherokee@yahoo.com and I'll keep everything confidential. Diana |

In most places there are volunteers at the local library that will help you complete the forms...and in some places they will even E-file it for you.
These people are usually retired professionals...but, in every case they are qualified...well at least according to the IRS.
Hope this helps. |

Learn to do them yourself. I know it sounds difficult, but it really isn't that bad. You can get forms and publications on-line, at libraries, some post offices for free. You can also file for free on-line with Tax/Act for a basic return (a modest fee for more complex and state returns) Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you have a basic return, but you could check it out. |

you can get quite inexpensively TAX SOFTWARE--computer program that walks you through the steps, OR
Go to a place that will take a percentage of your refund and will prepare the return free in exchange for getting paid when you get the refund |
