I lose my W2...?
I recently lost my W2 form. I left it in a folder at school...and when I went to go back to get the folder a few days later - it was gone. Is there any way I can get another form? Should I be worried that someone might have my W2 (Identity theft...etc.)

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

No big deal. Request a duplicate from your employer. (As far as identity theft....now somebody has your social sec no...so watch out for credit cards that you didn't apply for and request a copy of your credit bureau report from a credit bureau in a few weeks (it's free))

Contact your employer and request a duplicate copy.

There is a minimal chance of identity theft concerns as it does have your full name and address and SSN on it.

Gmoney makes a point, but it is not complete. Your bank will only cover the money part, if you identity is stolen. There are actually 5 areas and since they have your social now, someone can work with your number, sell it to someone so they can work, get a driver's lic in your name, or even get your medical info.
People are paranoid because there is no way to protect yourself. You can only monitor it and hope you have a company (which I represent, which explains why I know about this) that will fully restore it.
On the flip side, maybe they took it and just threw it away and you have nothing to worry about!

call the dept. that issued the W2 tell them what has happened , most of the time they are more than happy to send you a copy ..now that someone has your social security number, and your home address keep track of your credit report , and any strange new opened accounts for cell phones ,and or credit cards ..there is a lot of that going on especially with the cell phones ... report any thing you find suspicious...you can check it for free by obtaining the free yearly credit report that you are in titled to ....also keep your eyes open for anything out of the ordinary going on around your place of residence...the folder could have just been thrown out , but you can not be too careful this day ,and time with all the fraud going on...someone can take your info, and apply online for credit cards with your name and SS# , then activate the cards online..., and do a change of address for billing ...monitor things like this and anything that comes back with your name on it , but to an address you have never lived at , report it as a safe measure..., there are people searches online that will give your name and list of addresses tied to your name ..for little or no cost.

Well, there is not really much you can do if someone gets your information and uses it for evil purposes, but your employer (whether past or current) legally has to provide you with a new one. Just go and ask.

Gary
Get a new one from your employer...as for identity theft....people can use a lot more than just some stupid W2...

The bottom line is, people are OVERLY paranoid of identity theft.

If it happens to you...YOU ARE COVERED! The banks hook you up and get your affairs straight....

quit listening to the media!
