If you are working as an employee where they take out social security and medicare and you get a W-2, you should get somewhere around $1500 back, or around $2500 if the dependent is your qualifying child under age 17. |

If you earn more than $600 you are required to file an income tax return even if you end up not owing money.
If you earned money then ideally they withheld taxes from your pay during the year. It is only when you fill out the income tax return that you will be able to tell whether you owe them or if they owe you.
You MUST file even if you don't think you owe and don't want them to pay you. Filing and paying are two different things.
It impossible to say how much you would owe without knowing how many dependents you have and several other things about you. |

Most likely, yes. If you were self-employed, you will also owe self-employment tax, or if your money came from investments, you may owe capital gains taxes as well.
A rough guesstimate is that you will owe about $3,000 in taxes (filing single, 2 exemptions), not including self-employment/FICA, capital gains, or state and local taxes. This could go up or down depending on deductions, exemptions, or other taxes.
If you have already paid $4,000 in taxes, you'll probably get about a $1,000 refund come April 15th. |
