1. He should claim you as a dependent if you live with him.

2. But he doesn't claim your income if you're over 18.

3. You should file a 1040 EZ to report your income but be sure to check the #5 box that someone can claim you as a dependent.

It nets out in the end, so I wouldn't be concerned about it, besides you're dad is paying a lot more for your care and you're fortunate that he does. At 6000 you don't make enough to support yourself.

Yes, you probably would get more back; however, if your father claims you because you live with him and he is responsible for your welfare, I would leave that one alone.

he will end up having to pay a lot more..

it's better if he claims u.

yes... but he would lose a lot more.

But legally, he can claim you.. as $6K is not enough for you to live on. As long as he is providing you 50% or more of your living expenses (food, clothes, housing, utilities) he can claim you as a Dependant.

If you look on the face of the 1040EZ, it says:
"If someone CAN claim you as a dependent...".

If you dad can claim you, you cannot claim yourself. Legally, the choice is not up to you and your dad.

Requirements are spelled out in IRS pub 17. Your age, where you live, how much you make, and whether you are a full-time student all come into the mix.

not much

No, you are still earning too little!

Ann D
If you made $6,000.00 last year I don't think your dad can claim you. Or at least he has to state how much you earned on his taxes if he's claiming you as a dependent.

Deep Thinkin' Dude
no, if you are 17 or under, he is eligible for the tax break with no affect on you.
