You don't have to file - and with that little income, no you don't qualify for the $600 rebate, or even for the $300 minimum rebate.

If anything was withheld for federal income tax (box 2 of your W-2) then you should file to get it refunded to you.

No, you do need not file, you still can though.
Everything that I understand with the stipend, is that it is there, to help lower income and people who do not make enough to file taxes in the first place.

No that is not enough earnings to file taxes. Believe the minimum file this year is 8500.

Jss
If you are Single and nondependent, then you need not file if your income in 2007 is $8,750 or less.

If you only made $500 then you won't get any money from the stimulus bill just passed. You must make atlest $3000 to get anything. I would still file taxes if you got some sort of W2 or 1099 form because that means whoever paid you reported it to the government and if they didnt' take out taxes then you probably owe the government. They aren't too difficult to do so you might as well get the practice for the future.

summer breeze
You don't have to file, but if you had a deduction for federal taxes, and want that money refunded, you need to file a 1040EZ, which can be done for free on the internet.

Not sure, but it can't hurt to file for the stipend.

Also, did they take any Federal taxes out of your checks? If so, you want to get that back too.

IRS reference and forms: http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/

good luck!

If you're a dependent as your income total suggests, you won't get a rebate anyway. The reason for you to file would be to recoup whatever withholding you had from your wages.

You don't mention if you are being claimed as a dependent or if you had some taxes withheld? That affects your decision. If you are a dependent then your parents will get $300 for you and they will be filing for you, if not you can file get all your withheld tax money back but I am not sure if you qualify for the $600 stipend. Don't forget about state tax too.

Talk with your parents.

You can download "Taxact" for free off the internet, it will do all the numbers for you.
