you have to claim any income over $900.

dewkisses02
if you're filing jointly, you have to report your income.

skkavi
If you are filing jointly, then YES you have to report your income.

Wayne Z
If you are filing jointly, ALL of both of your incomes must be included. Yes, including your $1000.

Yes of course you do.

Yes you do need to include your income. If he files married filing separately he does not include your income. However, that would mean he gets a lower standard deduction and loses the 3,400 exemption for you.

Also, mfs does not get to claim dependent care credit, education credit and others.

AJ
No, you don't have to file jointly. However, there are too many advantages with filing jointly not to. The only reason to file, married filing separately, is if one of you have a tax intercept.

mark b
yes because you are fileing a joint return yhat means they put both incomes together! but u do not have to file a joint return u can file seoartly and let him file head of household and get a bigger reduction and u have to file yours because it is over 800.00 dollars

emmiegsmom
My husband and I are in a similar situation. We live in NY and there was recently passed an extra income tax for married people to receive so originally we were not even going to bother to report mine, but when we realized that we claimed both. What state are you in? If your not in a state where you are going to receive something extra for a joint return, then it really wouldnt matter.

Here's the straight scoop: No matter what anybody tells you, you only have to file taxes on income that is REPORTED to the IRS.
...So- say you picked up a vehicle at auction on the cheap, and then turned around and sold it at a profit. ...Does the IRS have any I-9 or other forms from the buyer that show you recieved income?
No??? They don't? ...Oh- well, guess what?
...While you are *technically* supposed to report it, there is no way on God's Green Earth that anybody other than you and the seller are ever going to know about it.
So, basically, you get to keep that income, tax free.
...And now, you're going to say something like: "Oh! I'm scared! ...What if they find out??"

Look- the government isn't *totally* stupid- they know this kind of thing goes on all the time. ...People who pick oranges, who clean houses, who do construction- and all who get paid under the table. ...There is no paper trail- nothing to report, so, as much as they would love to- the IRS never collects taxes from these people.

And on the EXTREMELY unlikely chance that the sky should ever crack open, and the IRS would use either some kind of telepathic abilities or voodoo magic to discover this unreported income, the fact of the matter is that you can only be held liable for the reporting of said income for 4 years. ...And even *THEN*, the amount of income you recieved is likely to be SO nominal, that it isn't going to be worthwhile for the IRS to pursue you for it.
(Trust me- the IRS is mostly interested in big ticket audits- that is, ones that generate great publicity, or result in $100,000+ in additional revenue.)

Likewise, I doubt that your whopping $1000 anual income is significant enough to the self-same government who wastes **Billions** of dollars on "smart"-bombs and pork barrel projects that its sudden lack of being reported *at all* will ever become in some way noticed.

...If I were you, I would let your husband file on his own (and take whatever deductions he can to reduce his tax liability).

The reason for this is that if you file as a married couple, you will only add to both of your tax liability overall (if you don't believe me, just look at the different tax rates for Adjusted Gross Income in the tax tables at the back of your 1040 booklet).

Then, if any of your $1000 was reported, file your individual tax return on the amount reported, and pocket the difference to put in a long term CD or High-Yield Money Market Account.
Chances are, with that little income, after deductions, you won't have any tax liability anyway.

v b
You don't have to file jointly.

If you live in a community property state, half of his income is yours anyway.

If you don't live in a community property state, you don't have a filing requirement because your income is less than $3400. His tax bill would go up considerably.
