Also, my wife changed her name. How does she file? With new name?

If you weren't married for any part of 2006, you must file single, unless you were eligible to file and Head of Household.

You have to file single. Congrats!!!! :)

Judy1
If you were not married as of 12/31/06, you don't file married - you'd file as single.

Your wife should file under the name that matches her social security card. If she hasn't gotten that changed yet, she should file under her former name.

Since your status was single in 2006, and you are preparing your income tax for the year ended 2006, I believe you should file your tax as single.

CJ
You would be considered single. It what ever your status is on 12/31 of the tax year. Your wife should file under what ever name is on file with the Social Security Administration. That is what the will match her name to.

go to www.taxact.com. it is a free filing service that answers all sorts of questions. to file you just answer the prompts. the website fills out the correct forms for you and you can even file electronically and ask for a electronic refunds which are faster. if you decide to use the service next year it keeps all your previous info and lets you update with your new status. way better than h&r block that charges an arm and a leg. congratulations.

Tax year is for 2006, you were Single. But do u qualify for Head of Household status? Read the material if you can claim dependants to qualify it may help you. Remember if you owe taxes, you can see wheither contributing to Roth IRA would reduce your tax owed... you have til 4/15 to contribute.

Tax year for 2007 you'll be Married status and hopefully NOT Seperately.

Charisma
Single, since your doing taxes for the year 2006. When 2007 return comes then you can do the married filing sep or joint or head of house if you have kids.
