I need to make an change on my W-2 form but I don't know how.?
The SNN on my W-2 form is wrong and my last employer refuses to change it. They keep giving me the run around and I've called all these numbers that they've given me and its just a recording. I've called my last employer & told her that I'm getting nowhere with the #'s she's given me & she's not returning my phone calls.I dont know what I should do b/c I need to file my taxes and I dont want to end up owing the Gov. I want the SSN change to the correct one. Actually two of my previous employers got my ssn wrong on my W-2. Its making me so mad b/c Ive going back & forward with these people for the last month. I dont know who I should call but i know that I need it fix b/c nxt yr I HAVE to file taxes. ((i'll be 18 on Fri)) and once you're 18 you have to file taxes. Technially I dont have to this yr but I just want everything fix.
WHO SHOULD I CALL? WHAT SHOULD I DO B4 ITS TOO LATE TO FILE MY TAXES?
-Thanks

I didnt give anyone the wrong SSN. The mistake happened when I got my military ID taken and the lady put in the wrong SSN then about a month ago I saw my SSN card and realized that the # on the ID was wrong. So I've been going by what was on the ID ((Which was wrong this whole time)) So when I found that out I contacted all my bank accounts and etc... and they changed it but everyone else had the right number but those two employers

Your employer is required by law to issue you a corrected W-2. If they refuse to do this, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and request to initiate a Form W-2 complaint against the employer. The IRS will send you AND your employer Form 4598 "Form W-2 or 1099 Not Received or Incorrect". This form advises your employer of their responsibility to issue a corrected W-2 with the correct SSN and the penalties they face if they fail to do so.

The IRS will also send you Form 4852 "Substitute for Form W-2..." which you can use to file your tax return if you do not receive a corrected W-2 from your employer by April 15th.

Being 18 has nothing to do with having to file taxes. Needing to file depends on your income, not on your age. If you made over $8750 last year, you have to file even if you were under 18. If you made less than that and anything was withheld for federal income tax, then you should file to get it refunded to you, otherwise they'll just keep it.

If two different employers got your ssn wrong, it sounds like you are giving them wrong info. But it's partially their fault too - they should be insisting on seeing your social security card when you start a job. But that said, if it's wrong, they are legally required to correct it. If they won't, call the IRS and tell them about it.

1. You can file with the bad W-2s. The software doesn't edit for the number on the W-2.

2. Even if you file on paper, the instructions on the back of the W-2 tell you to just cross out the number, write in the correct number and send it in.

3. You asked your employer. They probably don't want to spend $100 with ADP to rerun the correct W-2. And no, they aren't required to. The IRS suggests that if you are STILL working there, at least get the next year's records updated.

4. You SAVE the W-2. Eventually you'll want to give a copy to the SSA to ensure you get credit for your full earnings history.

5. I agree with others. You SHOULD have made sure this number was correct from day 1.

Dear, you have time. First of all your employer is in the wrong, they have and obligation to change it. But evidently they are being hard headed. basically blaming you for the mess up. Now what you need to do is call the IRS and explain what you just told me. tell them, that your employer will not change it, and what can you do. Make sure to tell them your age so they fill sorry for you, and don't think your trying to get away with something.

The payroll departments should be able to issue you a correct w-2. It shouldn't be a big deal.

You may file taxes with the W-2 you have. A Tax Pro can correct the W-2 form Social Security number with a substitute W-2.
Send a certified letter to the employers informing them of the mistake.
If the employers do not make the corrections, you may get some correspondence from the IRS regarding the mistakes. Just reply with a copy of the letters you sent to the employers.

Don't stress. This not a big deal. See a Tax Pro.

You need to call the IRS. An Employer can not refuse to make the correction with evidence from Social Security that the Social Security number issued belong to you. Also contact Social Security to issue such a letter.

De
well technically by law they have to make the changes. If there is an accountant on the check contact them. The BBB or Better Business Bureau, should be able to help you.. But in the future you should keep a copy of your W2 form and make sure that your social is correct.

ashley.dennis
Go to www.w2express.com and request a copy of your w-2's they will also ask you if any of the information is incorrect and you should be able to fix it on the site.

Call the IRS and ask them how to go about obtaining a corrected W2 from your employer or what you can do to correct it. 1-800-829-1040
