I never filed for 2006. I received an assessment letter, I have a question regarding the 1040?
The assessment letter tells me clearly what I made, what my deductions were and what I owe. No contest from me, I want to send them the 1040 as soon as I can. The lady from the IRS that I spoke to said I can't just sign the assessment form and mail that with the check, instead I have to fill out the 1040. Ok, but do I need to fill out all the worksheet parts for income, adjusted gross income, exemptions etc? The IRS basically did it all for me in the assesement letter. As I said, I'm not contesting a thing. I have no other deductions that I'm going to suddenly remember. Can't I just skip down to the 'Amount You Owe' section, sign it and send it in with the assessment form?
Additional Details
Oh, and by the way, when I send the 2006 1040 I will send a copy of the assessment letter, but also the W2's for that year employment?

IRS wants you to file a correct tax return instead of it doing it for you.

If I'm understanding this correctly, the IRS did s substitute for return, and sent you the bill.

Go ahead and send them a check.

To file a 1040, you have to fill out the entire 1040. If you agree with the assessment letter, just copy all the amounts over from the letter to the form.

Jss
First thing you must do is to send the payment so that you are not charged further interest and penalty. Sign it and send with payment.

Later you can do your 1040 and mail it. 2006 return can not be efiled.

Ms. Angel..
If you agree with how IRS will file for you then just sign the consent form and send the full payment, if you can't full pay the amount you owe then send Form 9465 Installment agreement request.
You don't have to file a Form 1040 if you are agreeing with how IRS will file for you.
You only need to file Form 1040 if you want to add dependent or have deduction you may claim.
So yes you can skip down to the "amount you owe" section and sign it.
Good luck! It is great that you called and didn't ignore the IRS.
IRS has not made the assessment to your account as of today, they are waiting for your reply. the letter 2566C gives you 30 days to respond and if you don't respond with a consent form or a Form 1040 then IRS sends you Letter 3219C (certified letter) giving you 90 days to file or appeal. After not responding to the 90 day letter then after 30 days IRS will then file for you.

Sign the form you received and mail a check or request an installment agreement.

John Scott
You should be able to just agree to the assessment and mail it in. You would only need to file an actual 1040 if you have other deductions or exemptions to claim, or a different filing status.

Nope, you have to fill in the form. You can use free-file online if you want to (and if you qualify). The program does all the math, and submits the return electronically. Besides, the IRS doesn't always do the return to your best advantage, so it's worthwhile to do the return yourself.. Check it out at:
