I owe $200 in taxes for '07. Can I file and NOT send a check?
I read that if you owed taxes the government will just take it out of your rebate. Is this right?

From the IRS Web site:
Q. I owe some money on my 2007 tax return but the amount I owe is less than my expected stimulus payment. Can I wait to pay the balance due and simply let my stimulus payment cover it?

A. You should file your 2007 return and pay the entire balance due by April 15. You should not wait for your economic stimulus payment to offset the balance due. If you wait, penalties and interest will accrue between April 15 and the date the balance is paid, even if it is ultimately covered by the stimulus payment, which will not be available before May. [New 2/28/2008]

Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced?

A. Yes. For this purpose, the stimulus payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the stimulus payment was applied.

The implication, as I read the answers, is that you can file without making a payment and your tax payment, plus interest and penalties, would be deducted from your stimulus payment.

The important thing to know is that filing for an extension is, by IRS rule, NOT an extension to pay. An extension is typically done when someone does not have all of their information, or is tardy in completing his or her return. However, and it is an important however, you must still provide a good faith estimate on your extension as to what your earnings and taxes will be, and pay it, if an amount is owed.

If you owe only $200 to the govt., pay it now before the IRS gets back at you.

Yes you can file without sending a check - if you don't send it to them fairly soon though, they'll contact you to either set up a payment plan, or just take it out of future refunds. If it isn't paid by 4/15 you'll pay interest and maybe penalties.

Ignore the suggestions to get an extension - that won't help. An extension is just to file, not to pay - the payment is due 4/15 even if you get an extension.

You need to file & request an extension. If you file & don't pay and don't file an extension you will be penalized. Extension is an easy form. I'm sure they will take it out of rebate but if you don't file the extension then you are non-compliant with the IRS & that is NOT GOOD.

Yeah, you can do that.

Just be aware that the IRS *will* charge you interest and penalties from 4/15 to the date the check is cut.

All tax liabilites will be garnished from these rebate checks.

You should file the return even if you cannot pay. After filing the IRS will send you a bill. You will be charged a late payment penalty and interest but you will not be charged a late filing penalty if you file by the due date.

Don't bother with extension. It is an extension of time to file and not an extension of time to pay. If you owe more than 10% of your tax amount your extension will be revoked. So no point in bothering with it.

if cant pay better get an extension. yeh you can file if yuo are getting anything back they will take it. but i think they can add fines or late fees not quite for sure but yeah you can just file then.

Michelle H
better file and ask for the extension last person mentioned. There is a form you can send in with your taxes to do it. April 15 is approaching rapidly and you can get in trouble for not filing on time, but extensions are available.

hljadds
Yes you can but you might also want to set up a payment plan.
