Yup!
I owe federal tax, why?
My sister earn a little more than I did and she's getting back little over $1000, and I owe the federal $439 dollars! WTF!!!! I bought a brand new car in 2006 and I included it on the 2007 taxes, if it wasnt for the new car I would of owed the federal last year. I just don't get what I'm doing wrong! HELP!
Additional Details
When you buy a new car, you have to include it on your taxes. No my sister is single with no kids and she is claiming 0 and I am also claiming 0.

Just because you make roughly the same amount of money does not mean you will get the same refund.

It all depends on deductions, credits and withholdings.

themurph2000
Also, what is your filing status? Perhaps she is not claiming any dependents on her W-2's, which will result in more tax taken out of her check each week/month/whatever.

1) You obviously aren't withholding enough. Adjust your W4.

2) What exactly do you mean you deducted your car? Personal vehicles are not deductible. You may want to have a professional re-look at 2006 or you are going to get a nice letter from the IRS in a couple of years.

No two tax returns (like people) are the same. Did you and your sister have identical incomes, deductions, credits, etc.?

Well, your post is very vague in the amounts you made, etc...however, I can only assume she claims less dependants through the year or has more with-held to see the refund.

My husband and I always claim Married and 0 on our W-4 and then at tax time, we always get some back.

If your job is a part time job where they don't withhold what they should, that can kill you...so contact your accounting department at your job and see if they're withholding the correct amounts.

you're probably not getting enough taxes withheld from your paycheck = what did you fill in on your w-4 form? it should only be single 0 or 1 if you're single or you will wind up owing taxes - you sister probably had single 0, you probably have single 2 or something - a car has nothing to do with income taxes - where did you include it? if you had any expense it in 2006, you can't claim it in another year

You owe simply because you didn't have enough money withheld form your pay to cover your tax liability. That's not a bad thing really, as you did NOT make a large interest-free loan to the government as your sister foolishly did. Look at it this way: You got an extra $30 in your paycheck every week. Now it's time to settle up.

I'm not sure how you figure that buying a car would save you anything on your taxes in 2006 unless you use it for business or if you claimed an itemized deduction for the sales taxes and/or personal property taxes that you paid on it. Excluding business use a car is a personal expense and won't save you any money at tax time.

Sugar Magnolia Says GO CHIEFS!
You can't claim a car you purchased on your taxes, silly, unless you use it for business and don't get compensated from your employer.

Beverly S
Looks like your error was in 2006- you can't claim the interest on a car on your taxes. Buying a new car would not have affected your tax liability at all. Have your employer take out about $10.00 a week more & you shouldn't owe next year. If your sister has kids that probably why she gets a refund, more deductions than you.
