I received an IRS refund check that was for $378,844.48, an error. Can I still cash it?

Insuranceman
If you do, or even deposit the check, they will come back to you wantin paid back PLUS interest.

It would be best to go to your local office and return it.

Good lusk and I hope this helps!

The IRS would charge you 8% interest. My bank accounts pay 4% at best so even holding the money is dumb.

Write void on the back of the check (not the front like you would for your own checks) and send it back to the IRS. They won't count it has having been cashed and won't bill you anything.

No, do not cash it. Return it to your local IRS office... If you cash it, the IRS will figure out that it's not yours, and will demand the money back with interest.

Vicky L
I wouldn't if I were you. The money was sent to you in ERROR and therefore is NOT actually your money. Once you cash it or deposit it you will have committed fraud and the IRS can come after you demanding not only their money back but penalties and interest, as well. I don't know how much money you make, but for me it would take me my ENTIRE life and the ENTIRE life of both my kids to pay back that kind of money!

Well...to answer your actual question...CAN you cash it...YES you can...however the question you should have asked is SHOULD I cash it...NO (or at least not if you like living outside of a federal country club...)

Gary
I would call your local IRS field office as soon as possible. They will come looking for it.

Mag
NO WAY!! It's still TheIRS, no way would I even touch the check itself. Return it certified mail with insurance so you have proof in case it gets lost.

If you receive a check for a refund you are not entitled to, or for an overpayment that should have been credited to estimated tax, do not cash the check. Call the IRS.

If you receive a check for more than the refund you claimed, do not cash the check until you receive a notice explaining the difference.

If your refund check is for less than you claimed, it should be accompanied by a notice explaining the difference. Cashing the check does not stop you from claiming an additional amount of refund.

If you did not receive a notice and you have any questions about the amount of your refund, you should wait 2 weeks. If you still have not received a notice, call the IRS.
