Craig L | I received my stimulus check today, but the total was incorrect...? |
I prepared my own taxes and left off my sons SS#, I called the IRS and they corrected my tax refund, but I was told they could not correct the stimulus check. They said i have to claim the $300 for my child on next years tax return, and i would recieve $300 extra on next years return. What does that mean and how do I claim this next year?? Thanks for the help. |

Check IRS website for more information
Q. I received my stimulus payment, but it was less than what my friends and neighbors received. Why?
A. Your economic stimulus payment will be based on information provided on your 2007 income tax return.
Many, but not all, taxpayers qualify for the maximum basic payment of $600 for singles or $1,200 for married couples. Many parents are also receiving an additional $300 for each qualifying child, born after Dec. 31, 1990.
Your payment may be less than the maximum for one or more of the following reasons:
You are single and your net income tax liability is less than $600. If you file Form 1040 net income tax liability is the amount shown on Line 57, plus the amount on Line 52.
You are married and your net income tax liability is less than $1,200.
You are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $75,000. On Form 1040, AGI is the amount on Line 37.
You are married filing a joint return and your AGI is more than $150,000.
You owe back taxes.
You have non-tax federal debts such as unpaid student loans or child-support obligations.
Around the same time you receive your payment, you will receive a notice from the IRS explaining how your payment was figured. It is important to keep this notice as a record of your economic stimulus payment. In addition, you’ll get a separate notice if you owe back taxes or non-tax debts. |

The stimulus package payment is an advance on a credit for next year's taxes.
If your current payment was calculated wrong, you'll get the rest on your tax return next year (2008 tax return). There will be a place for calculating the credit on next year's 1040 form (or 1040A or 1040-EZ). You'll subtract what you actually received, and any remainder will be added to your refund. |

The rebate is really an early refund on your 2008 taxes.
I have not yet seen anything on how the rebate will be dealt with on 2008 tax returns. I have heard that that you will receive a notice that says, "You need to save this notice to use on your 2008 return" and also gives you the amount of your rebate. I have not actually seen one of these notices.
Everyone will just have to wait to read the instructions for preparing 2008 tax returns - unless there is something on the IRSwebsite. |

You claim it next year by doing the 2008 tax return. There will be a worksheet to get credit for rebate that you qualify for that you did not receive. |

Hey, Don't bother calling, if you can get through, they will tell you exactly what everyone is saying. I transposed the last two digits of one of my daughters SSN and they only counted one qualifying child for 2007. Oh well I look at it as an extra $300 next year. Just keep records to remind you 10 months from now. :-) |

This happened to me too. I didn't receive the extra $300 for my son. I looked around online and they say you can call the IRS but I'm sure they will tell you what everyone else is saying for their answers, 2008 tax returns. I don't understand why they tell you one thing and then do another. Guess we should all be used to that by now. |

From what I have read, there will be an additional form or area on your 1040 to fill out to get the stimulus you are qualified for. You have to wait until you file your 2008 taxes. |
