Yup, it's a scam. Most scams are pretty obvious. Why would the IRS be contacting you through unsolicited email? And why would they use a live.com email address?

Lancez
Yes,its a scam

Send this to the REAL IRS, please. They love to hunt down scammers and give them a 20 year vacation at a prison somewhere.

judith l
big scam.

My Evil Twin
The IRS does not send out notices telling you what they think your refund is going to be.

It's a scam.

bostonianinmo
It's an OBVIOUS scam.

First off, the IRS never contacts taxpayers by e-mail!

Secondly, the e-mail address is a DEAD giveaway as it's on a free e-mail site. A genuine e-mail address would be on the irs.gov domain. However as noted above the IRS would NEVER contact a taxpayer by e-mail.

Thirdly, the IRS does NOT post refunds to credit or debit card accounts. This is an thinly disguised attempt at getting credit card numbers and CVN codes. Anyone foolish or naive enough to respond would see their credit card run up with fraudulent charges.

Let's have some fun with this scammer! Open a throw-away account on Yahoo, MSN, etc. and send this douchebag 50 or 60 spams using made up junk names and bogus credit card numbers. Flood his inbox with garbage and the few rubes who take it seriously will hopefully get lost in the noise of the bogus claims.

Miss-Psycho-B
If there was really a tax refund with your name on it, they'd have sent you a letter, not an e-mail. At least that's how it's done where I'm from. Beware...
