Like the previous post, they'll have been inspected in a few weeks. If its a simple fraud then they'll have been assessed and fined but if its more complex and results in court porceedings, it can take months to gather the evidence, especially if it both VAT and Income Tax. HMRC will be thorough in their investigation and ensure that they take time to uncover all the evidence and recover the money.
In therms of whether people think its right or wrong, based on their acceptance of being dishonest simply because its the "Taxman", its OUR money they are stealing, not the taxman - they get no bonus for uncovering theft. If they'd steal from the taxman, they'd steal from you and me.
In business terms, they are competing unfairly with others by defrauding VAT. The VAT line used to be that they sought to protect the honest trader from the dishonest ones. |

Cannot answer your question but will make a comment to all the people who are against your action. It is theft and the people that are being stolen from are you and me. I object to subsidising these thieves. Remember you are paying more tax and vat because of thieves like these. |

If the info you gave relates to previous years, HMRC would have to examine previous tax returns. If the person has not made any returns, they would have to be issued and then HMRC would have to wait for them to come back. then examine them, look at known lifestyle, etc. There are a lot of unknowns here. It also depends on how busy the tax office of the person is - they can only carry so many investigations at one time.
One thing is for sure, you will not be informed as to whether or not HMRC has used this information.

i say good for, not sure how long it takes to do i think they will be watched for a while first then be interviewed. Last year we lived in a annexe off someones house, me and my partner worked very hard to pay our bills etc, and next door what she used to do was work 16hours and then claim benefits aswel and her partner never worked they had 5kids, and what anoyed us was she worked so little but they afford so much stuff she used to always dye her hair at a salon telling me it cost her 80quid they used to by alsorts or expensive stuff its not fair. |

They would have had the inspection anything from 2 - 6 weeks after you reported them.
They check purchase and supplier invoices along with bank statements etc. and previous tax returns, all dating back 3 years.
I would think by now whomever the fraudster was, would have been paying what they owe (or worse jail) depending on the severity of the fraud. |

What country is this in?
In the UK it can take months upon months as some many fraud cases, some times they only check it to money activity and then just shut the case. Sister worked for council. |

Oh dear. So they are now going to spend thousands of pounds investigating it to recover a few hundred pounds in lost tax. This country's bankrupt enough as it is without giving the Inland Revenue more excuses to piss money up the wall. |
