I the UK goes bankcrupt do we loose our bank savings?
I'm thinking about what's happened in Iceland. If the whole economy collapsed, does the dept carry onto ourselves and we loose all debts/ mortgages and savings? Should I close my bank accounts and keep money in the house?

Not much point keeping your money in the house - apart from the risk - if the whole UK goes bankrupt the money wont be worth the paper it is written on anyway. A banknote is a promissary note - just a piece of paper saying that the Bank of England promises' to pay the bearer on demand the sum of ........ If the Bank of England has gone bankrupt they cannot meet that promise so you could use your bundle of £20 notes as toilet paper i suppose, but they would not be of use for anything else.

If UK goes bankrupt, you money is still safe in the bank. But its purchasing value is another matter to consider.

Great Britain will not go bankrupt.Up to £35000 is guaranteed .

Yeah, if the whole banking system collapases.

The Government is guaranteeing to a maximum of £50,000 that in the event a bank goes bust the government will reimburse you. If you have more than £50K, move some to another bank.

individual banks go under, not the business as a whole.

the UK government itself is solid, they're not going to default any time soon.

as for guarantees on your savings, each UK institution will guarantee you £50,000 of your savings.

so, if you have say, £150,000 to stash away; £50k in Kaupthing Edge, 50k in Birmingham Midshires and 50k in ICICI will ensure that if all 3 go bust, you get your £150 back.

You are safe with up to £50,000 in savings in ONE of the banks in your banks GROUP.So,if you were to have all your savings in one place (up to £50,000) it will be safe as it is guaranteed by the government. If you have more than £50,000 then you must make sure that the other bank you put put the surplus into is NOT one of the other banks in your banks group otherwise you could lose it.

If you have money!!!!! Then pay up

If you have more than £50,000 , leave 50 in uk and spread the rest to banks across the world , where they have guaranteed them as well

There is a misunderstanding here...you wouldn't LOSE your money...it would be STOLEN.
