If this code number is being operated on a week or month 1 basis, and it shouldn't be at this time of year, you will be paying approximately the right amount of tax. If your pay is under £16501 per annum, you are caught in the trap created by the abolition of the 10% tax rate, and will have to pay extra tax. The Chancellor has announced amendments tonight, but they won't become effective until the autumn.
Look at www.listentotaxman, and imput your payslip details. That will show you the amount of tax you should be paying. |

543L is *not* an emergency tax code.
It means you can earn £5430 before paying tax. |

543L is this year's standard tax code for a single person, not an emergency code. If that's not right for you, go and harass your payroll people |

543L is only emergency code if it is on a week 1 basis which is not possible at this time of the year. Either email me with your pay and tax to date or query this with your payroll dept. |

543L is not an emergency tax code
you are on an emergency tax code if you are on a 'week 1' or 'month 1' basis
if this is the case, contact your local tax office to issue with a cumulative 543L tax code and your tax will automatically correct itself in your next pay |

The tax man will sort this out for you over time.....keep all your pay slips and any P60's you get for future reference....they rarely give you a lump sum back, they will just adjust your tax code in the future. |

You are on Emergency Tax but so is most of the UK. Emergency Tax was probably not the best name to give this tax code because everyone starts to panic because it has the word emergency. You are getting the basic allowance, the reason you will be be paying more tax now is beacuse we no longer have the benefit of the 10% tax band as that was abolished from 6/4/08 most people are affected by this but there's nothing we can do.
Phone 0845 7143 143 Employer Helpline and ask for the telephone number for you tax office if you want to go through it with someone, they will need to know where your Employers Head Office is based. |

you should ring your revenue dept tell them when you left your old job .
its either 2 things why your on emergency tax
1. your old employer has not put in your p45 to the revenue
did you get your copy of it when leaving because your meant to by law to give your new employer.
2. your new employer hasn't looked for your tax credits off the revenue yet .
so you need to ring the revenue or tax office which ever it is in your country and ask them was there a p45 filed for you from your last employer and get the company registration no of your new employer so you can tell the office all the details of your new job.
then when your current employer gets your new tax details you will be refunded the tax owed back to you straight away all in the one week's pay. |

emergency tax codes have br in them. If u are on emergency tax, youl get whatever u overpaid back when u get a new tax code. I dont think u are tho, your code means you can earn £5430 before paying tax. |

There's a big difference between the perception and the reality of the emergency tax code. emergency sounds bad, but it isn't.
The single person's allowance for this year is £5435, but in tax office terminology 543L (from which the allowance is derived) is the emergency tax code for this year.
You will NOT be paying a different rate of tax to anyone else, in fact 543L is pretty ordinary if you have no extra allowances or taxable benefits that would affect your coding. |
